Job Description

This role is hybrid with the expectation to work out of our Cambourne offices three days a week.

Job Summary

Creation and development of embedded software for advanced distributed spectral monitoring systems using modern C++17 and Rust in user space on Linux. Operating independently with limited supervision, you will own complex project streams, improve development processes, and make significant contributions to departmental goals. Where appropriate, development is accelerated using AI tooling, with engineers remaining fully responsible for code quality. This role offers strong technical ownership alongside opportunities to guide and mentor peers in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Own and drive key phases of the full software development lifecycle (requirements analysis, architecture design, development, testing, and deployment).
  • Work independently under limited supervision to deliver complex software projects on schedule.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level software engineers.
  • Identify and implement process, tool, and system improvements to enhance overall performance and code quality across the team.
  • Lead testing efforts, including test automation for unit, regression, and performance frameworks.
  • Review code written by colleagues and AI, championing quality standards and best development practices across the team.
  • Communicate effectively with internal cross-functional teams and external partners/vendors when needed.

Basic Requirements

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • University degree in Computer Science, Electronics, or a related engineering field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in software engineering.
  • Proven hands-on experience with Rust in a Linux or embedded context.
  • Strong modern C++17 (ISO/IEC 14882:2017) programming skills in a Linux environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and drive projects to completion.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, or delegating tasks to lower-level engineers.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills.

Highly Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience using AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining strict quality standards.
  • Signal processing domain knowledge.
  • Experience defining engineering policies, quality standards, or system architecture updates.

Desirable

  • Practical experience in project management methods.
  • Design and implementation of kernel-level and/or driver code.
  • Python / Docker / Git / Linux shell scripting skills.
  • Experience with distributed and networked systems.
