(TEL) delivers environmental engineering, investigation, consulting, and remediation services to government agencies and private clients in the areas of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW), Emerging Contaminants, Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) and Environmental Compliance. About the Role
We are seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist II (Part-Time) to support environmental restoration and compliance projects for US government and commercial clients. This position will support remedial investigation, remedial design, and remedial actions for contaminated sites throughout the US and requires an understanding of environmental investigation and remediation concepts. This job requires the ability to monitor subcontractors to ensure performance of work in accordance with environmental laws, policies, and contractual requirements, and the oversight of in-house field crews conducting site investigations and/or remediation of soils, groundwater, surface water, or sediments at petroleum- and hazardous-waste sites. This job may require, as part of a team, writing technical documents such as reports, decision documents, and studies as required by the contract.
This is a hybrid remote work role based in the United States. This role requires an estimated 60% travel annually within the United States, depending on project requirements.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the successful completion of environmental compliance and/or remediation projects, including field work and preparation of planning documents, reports, designs, and contract documents.
- Preparation of subcontractor scopes of work and specifications. Solicit, evaluate, and procure subcontractors for investigation or remediation projects.
- Manage and supervise environmental cleanup contractors on-site.
- Coordination and interaction with homeowners and the public in support of the government client.
- May serve as Field Team Leader for collecting groundwater, soil, sediment, and surface water for laboratory analysis.
- With support from a Project Geologist or Project Manager, prepares lithologic logs, potentiometric surface maps, geographic information system (GIS) maps, and tables presenting results of field investigations.
- Prepares technical reports that include descriptions of geology, hydrogeology, nature and extent of contamination, and fate and transport of site contaminants.
- Supports investigation and remediation planning, including preparing planning and safety documents, reporting, and developing and analyzing remedial alternatives, including in situ and ex situ groundwater treatment.
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of experience participating in environmental restoration projects.
- Strong commitment to site safety and adherence to safety plans.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and professional demeanor. A positive, solution-seeking attitude and team player.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to execute multiple assignments at various locations, providing a consistently high level of quality and accuracy. Ability to self-manage, take direction, and proactively run with tasks.
- Professional demeanor with a positive, solution-seeking attitude and personal responsibility.
- Current driver’s license, safe driving record, ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and physical ability to lift at least 30 pounds (required for environmental sample collection and shipping).
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
- Must be able to obtain clearance to access military bases and other federal government installations to perform job duties.
Education and Training
- Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science (geology, chemistry, biology, ecology, natural resources) or engineering (civil, environmental, chemical) from an accredited institution.
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training with current annual 8-hour update is a plus; training may be provided for otherwise qualified applicants as required.
- OSHA 30 Hour Construction certification is preferred; training may be provided for otherwise qualified applicants.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office software (including Outlook, Word, and Excel).
Physical Requirements
- Must be able and willing to travel to visit job sites, attend client meetings, and/or attend professional or technical conferences, typically up to 60% annually, within the United States.
- Physically able, with or without accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, moisture, dryness, and vibration.
- This position requires the ability to perform physical activities associated with field work, including walking long distances while carrying equipment, bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching.
- Position requires frequent (more than 50% of workday) performance of repetitive bending & stooping, standing/walking, power gripping/squeezing (hand tools, levers, etc.), operation of vehicles, and lifting 25 to 50 pounds. Often (25-50% of workday) performing work with arms above shoulder level, and keyboard/mouse operations. Occasionally (10-25% of workday) perform repetitive fine hand movements and lifting 50 to 75 pounds. Rarely (less than 10% of workday) climbing stairs, working in the vicinity of heavy equipment, and confined space entry.
- Position requires wearing personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hats/safety helmets, hearing protection, and a respirator.
- Must be able to work in a hybrid remote work arrangement with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk while working on a computer.

TEL supports major project operations in AL, AK, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, KS, MD, MO, MS, NV, OH, OK, TX, VA, and WA. Telework is available for qualified staff.
