GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

Under the supervision of a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), performs a variety of patient care activities and related support services necessary to meet the personal needs, safety, and comfort of patients in the perioperative setting.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• •Must be currently enrolled in a Certified Surgical Technologist program and be within nine (9) months of graduation.
• •Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required upon hire. ACLS and/or PALS certification may be accepted in lieu of BLS.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• •Demonstrates and supports the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values in daily interactions and work practices.
• •Provides care appropriate to the age-specific needs of assigned patients, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations, as applicable.
• •Adheres to hospital safety policies, procedures, and infection prevention standards.
• •Performs duties within the scope of practice of a Surgical Technologist Student under the direct supervision of a Certified Surgical Technologist.
• •Demonstrates safe and appropriate operation of patient care and surgical equipment.
• •Applies knowledge of electrocautery safety, including grounding pad placement and cautery use during procedures.
• •Recognizes breaks in aseptic technique and takes immediate corrective action.
• •Assists with equipment inspections and functionality checks prior to procedures.
• •Assists with reviewing and updating surgeon preference cards as directed.
• •Assists with gowning and gloving members of the sterile surgical team.
• •Demonstrates the ability to gown and glove self-using both open and closed gloving techniques.
• •Participates in instrument, sponge, and sharps counts for assigned procedures under supervision.
• •Assists the RN Circulator and surgical team with room setup, equipment gathering, and preparation for surgical procedures.
• •Maintains a clean, organized, and safe surgical environment throughout procedures.
