Supervisory Hydrologic Technician

Summary

You will serve as a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician with Geological Survey. This position serves in the Pennsylvania Water Science Center (PAWSC) in Williamsport, PA which supervises a group of employees conducting data collection, analysis, and publication in support of varying complexity throughout Pennsylvania and in support of USGS national programs. GS-12 Salary: Salary: $89,508 (Step 01) to $116,362 (Step 10)

Duties

As a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician within the Pennsylvania Water Science Center, some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Plans, designs, schedules, and supervises the activities of employees and student interns engaged in surface, ground, and water-quality hydrologic data collection, data management, and data reporting activities for the Williamsport Office of the Science Center. Promotes and maintains cooperator relations with USGS programs, and local, State, and other Federal agencies concerned with the development and operation of hydrologic networks. Serves as the local expert on new and innovative technologies in hydrologic data collection. Provides administrative and technical direction to the staff utilizing knowledge of pertinent Federal and Bureau personnel, EEO, safety, finance and procurement policies and procedures.

This is a supervisory position that may require completion of a supervisory probationary period. Qualifications: For GS-12: Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: planning and conducting the computation and collection of data from approximately thirty or more gaging stations; determining stage-discharge relations, computing rating tables and mean daily, monthly and annual discharge rates from these stations. Acting as a party chief and making indirect measurements of flood flows under extremely difficult conditions. Collecting data including that required to compute flood flows by the slope-area method, by measurement of flow over dams, by flow through culverts and by flow over embankments. Obtaining hydrologic data from published and unpublished sources and conducting hydrologic studies relative to the frequency of flood and droughts. Planning and coordinating a ground water survey program for an area that may be either a small area with complex features or a larger area with planning and coordinating problems related to the scope of the ground water survey operations. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement - 10/14/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position does not allow substituting education for experience. Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
