Summary

About the Position: Inspects, tests, and evaluates munitions, explosives, and storage facilities for safety and readiness. Performs maintenance, demilitarization, and open burn/detonation operations. This position serves as an Ammunition Inspector within a developmental career ladder (WG-07 through WG-10). Selection will be made at the WG-07. Progression to the target grade of WG-10 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and management discretion.

Duties

  • Inspect individual munitions items and related material.
  • Independently perform inspections of storage sites for non-standard and hazardous methods of storing ammunition and components.
  • Set up and operate specialized Ammunition Peculiar Equipment, dismantling complete rounds into components for inspecting and testing.
  • Observe and inspect the demolition of high-explosive and explosive components, the burning of powder, and the destruction of ammunition.
  • Prepare Ammunition Transfer Records or LMP equivalent for movement of samples into inspection building and return to storage.
  • Perform a variety of operations in the renovation, modification, demilitarization, care, and preservation of ammunition and explosives.
  • Perform hazardous waste management duties and/or hazardous waste worker duties in permitted or regulated facilities.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Ammunition Inspector without more than normal supervision. Assist in operating machinery or equipment to assemble, disassemble, modify, inspect, or process ammunition, munitions, or explosives; OR Follow safe and proper methods to receive, load, unload, ship, move, store, or verify ammunition, explosives. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading) Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 45 pounds; working on production lines at rhythmic pace for extended periods; moving and replacing components; loading and unloading items, etc., including standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and manipulating parts, and using machines and hand tools. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside; and is subject to extreme weather conditions and exposure to dirt, grease, and noise from machinery. Works with and in close proximity to unusually hazardous materials; may require use of a respirator due to odors or fumes. Must exercise extreme care to prevent fires, explosions, etc., that could result in serious injury, dismemberment, and/or loss of life to self and/or other workers. Subject to hazards resulting from operation of industrial and production equipment, from assembly operations, or from working around powered conveyors, etc., where accidents could result in serious injury. Is required to wear protective clothing which is specially made and treated for working on and around explosives (safety shoes, glasses, gas masks, coveralls, etc.)
