Assistant General Counsel

Sony Pictures Entertainment seeks an experienced attorney to join its Business and Legal Affairs Department in Culver City, California, as Assistant General Counsel supporting Sony Pictures Television’s Consumer Platforms & Services (CP&S) and Networks divisions. Sony Pictures owns and operates direct-to-consumer services and branded digital and linear channels around the world. This attorney will serve as a lead legal advisor to the business on product, advertising, technology, and distribution matters, and will help shape legal strategy for new initiatives across digital platforms and streaming services. This attorney may also be involved in additional new business initiatives involving the distribution of content and channels across digital platforms, including YouTube, FAST channels, and other streaming services.

The successful candidate will join an experienced, collaborative and supportive legal group and will be expected to operate with a high degree of independence and judgment, working directly with senior business executives and with commercial and legal experts across Sony Pictures.

Responsibilities:

• •Serve as lead legal advisor to senior business leaders on product, ad tech, technology and platform initiatives.
• •Lead the structuring, drafting and negotiation of complex and strategic agreements, including content, distribution, advertising and technology deals.
• •Provide product counseling throughout the product lifecycle, anticipating legal and regulatory issues and developing practical solutions.
• •Independently assess legal and business risk, exercise sound judgment on escalation, and deliver clear, business-oriented advice.
• •Manage outside counsel and drive cross-functional resolution of complex matters.
• •Monitor legal, regulatory and industry developments affecting digital media and translate them into practical guidance for the business.

Qualifications:

• •J.D. from an accredited law school required.
• •Active membership in the California State Bar or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California.
• •Ten or more years of relevant experience at a major law firm, studio, television network, streaming service, or other media or technology company; in-house experience preferred. Relevant areas of expertise include product counseling, technology transactions, ad tech/digital advertising, privacy, commercial transactions, licensing, intellectual property, and regulatory affairs.
• •Proven ability to lead complex negotiations and serve as a trusted advisor to senior executives.
• •Ability to set legal strategy and exercise independent judgment on novel issues with minimal supervision.
• •Excellent negotiating, drafting, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
• •Strong understanding of the evolving ways in which audiences consume entertainment content.
• •Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to manage a high volume of matters under tight deadlines.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $220,000-$265,000. This role may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
