Position Overview:
The Associate Project Manager is an experienced structural engineer transitioning into project management while continuing to perform and provide technical direction for structural engineering design. Working under the direction of a Project Manager or Project Executive, the Associate Project Manager develops the skills necessary to manage project scope, schedule, coordination, communication, staffing, and financial performance.
Associate Project Managers may manage smaller or less-complex projects with oversight from a Project Manager or Project Executive while supporting the management and execution of larger, more complex projects. This position serves as an important link between project leadership, engineering staff, BIM/modeling staff, clients, and other project participants.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage smaller or less-complex structural engineering projects under the oversight of a Project Manager or Project Executive, taking responsibility for project coordination, communication, deliverables, schedules, and construction-phase services.
Support the planning and execution of larger or more complex projects and take ownership of assigned project management responsibilities.
Balance project management responsibilities with technical structural engineering work and provide technical direction on assigned design and engineering tasks.
Develop project work plans, schedules, staffing plans, and internal assignments necessary to meet project deliverables and established project requirements.
Coordinate engineering and BIM/modeling activities and communicate project priorities, assignments, deadlines, and expectations to project team members.
Provide technical direction and guidance to Project Engineers and BIM/modeling team members and assist with resolving engineering, detailing, modeling, and coordination issues.
Review engineering calculations, analysis models, structural drawings, and other project deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, and conformance with Apex standards.
Coordinate structural requirements with architects, MEP/FP consultants, contractors, fabricators, and other project participants and facilitate resolution of coordination issues affecting project scope, schedule, or structural design.
Serve as a primary day-to-day contact for clients and project participants on assigned smaller projects and support Project Managers or Project Executives with client communication on larger projects.
Participate in project meetings and clearly communicate project status, structural design requirements, coordination items, decisions, action items, and required information.
Develop and maintain professional client relationships through responsive communication, technical competence, accountability, and consistent project execution.
Identify technical, coordination, schedule, staffing, scope, or project execution issues and communicate potential impacts, recommended solutions, and required decisions to the Project Manager or Project Executive.
Coordinate responses to RFIs, submittals, field conditions, and other construction-phase engineering items and assist with the resolution of complex construction issues.
Monitor assigned project activities against established schedules, deliverables, staffing plans, and project requirements and communicate potential delays or resource concerns proactively.
Develop an understanding of project scope, fee, and contractual requirements and assist with monitoring project performance, changes in scope, and additional services.
Assist with identifying potential additional services and changes in project scope and communicate them to the Project Manager or Project Executive before additional work is performed.
Assist with developing project scopes, fee proposals, schedules, staffing plans, and resource requirements for new and existing projects.
Maintain project documentation and communication necessary to support organized project execution, including meeting information, action items, decisions, and project correspondence.
Participate in project QA/QC processes and help ensure Apex’s engineering standards, design procedures, documentation requirements, and project delivery processes are consistently followed.
Provide day-to-day technical guidance, mentorship, and constructive feedback to Project Engineer I, II, and III team members as appropriate.
Support the professional development of less-experienced team members by helping communicate expectations, answering technical questions, and reinforcing Apex engineering standards and processes.
Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups and contribute to the continued development of engineering standards, design tools, technical resources, workflows, and lessons learned.
Continue developing project management skills in scope management, scheduling, staffing, budgeting, client communication, risk identification, and project execution.
Perform structural analysis and design as needed to support assigned projects and maintain technical proficiency while transitioning toward increased project management responsibility.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university.
Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred.
Typically five or more years of relevant structural engineering experience with progressively increasing technical and project responsibilities.

Structural Engineer (SE) licensure preferred and may be required based on project type and jurisdiction.
Strong technical knowledge of structural analysis, building systems, load paths, and the design of structural systems using steel, concrete, masonry, and other applicable materials.
Strong working knowledge of applicable building codes, ASCE 7, and structural material design standards.
Proficiency with structural analysis and design software and the ability to review complex analysis models, calculations, and engineering work prepared by other engineers.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural, structural, and MEP/FP construction documents and identifying structural coordination requirements, conflicts, and project impacts.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, fabricators, clients, and other project participants.
Working knowledge of project management fundamentals, including project scope, schedules, staffing, fees, budgets, additional services, resource planning, and project deliverables.

Ability to provide clear technical direction, constructive feedback, and appropriate support to engineering and BIM/modeling team members.
Strong client-service mindset with the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical and project-related information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
