The Commercial Lending Analyst II is an intermediate commercial credit role responsible for supporting the Commercial Lending team through independent financial analysis, credit underwriting, portfolio monitoring, documentation review, and risk assessment. This position supports moderate-complexity commercial lending files and assists Account Managers by preparing credit applications, annual reviews, renewals, amendments, and recommendations that align with policy, risk appetite, and member needs. The Commercial Lending Analyst II is expected to demonstrate sound credit judgment, strong analytical capability, and the ability to manage assigned work with reduced supervision while contributing to the development of strong commercial lending practices within BVCU.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Credit Accountabilities

Independently prepare credit applications, credit summaries, annual reviews, renewals, amendments, and recommendation memos for moderate-complexity commercial lending requests.

Complete detailed financial statement analysis, including ratio analysis, trend analysis, cash flow analysis, debt service coverage, margining analysis, repayment capacity, and sensitivity analysis.

Assess borrower financial performance, management capacity, industry conditions, collateral support, repayment sources, and key credit risks.

Recommend appropriate loan structure, security, covenants, reporting requirements, repayment terms, conditions, and risk mitigants in alignment with policy and risk appetite.

Identify policy exceptions, documentation gaps, collateral concerns, covenant weaknesses, and credit risk issues, and recommend appropriate corrective actions or mitigants.

Prepare, review, and validate Commitment Letters, Loan Agreements, security documentation, solicitor instructions, and funding requirements in accordance with approved terms and conditions.

Monitor ongoing borrowing conditions, financial reporting, covenants, insurance, appraisals, margin requirements, annual reviews, renewals, and loan file follow-up items.

Identify and escalate delinquencies, deteriorating financial performance, covenant breaches, documentation exceptions, risk rating concerns, and other early-warning indicators.

Maintain accurate, complete, and audit-ready commercial lending files that meet internal standards, approval conditions, and regulatory requirements.

Portfolio, Member, and Business Support

Act as a credit partner to Account Managers by preparing financial summaries, risk assessments, credit recommendations, and supporting materials for lending discussions and member meetings.

Manage assigned portfolio monitoring activities, including financial statement follow-up, covenant tracking, insurance renewals, reporting requirements, arrears monitoring, and exception resolution.

Communicate directly with members, solicitors, accountants, appraisers, insurers, branches, and internal departments to gather information, resolve outstanding conditions, and support timely file completion.

Support commercial real estate, diversified commercial, agricultural, small business, and other commercial lending files as assigned.

Conduct industry, market, collateral, and borrower research to support credit assessment, portfolio monitoring, and business development activities.

Assist with improving credit processes, lending templates, documentation standards, workflow tracking, and reporting tools.

Provide guidance to junior analysts or lending support staff on financial spreading, documentation requirements, workflow practices, file organization, and credit process expectations.

Teamwork

Collaborate with the Credit Team, Administration Office, branches, and other departments with a mindset of service, accuracy, risk awareness, and continuous improvement.

Participate in training and development programs provided by internal and external resources and apply learning to improve credit quality and portfolio support.

Provide backup and support to the Commercial Lending team as required, including assisting with workload balancing, file prioritization, and urgent funding or renewal requirements.

Champion team success through knowledge sharing, coaching, process discipline, and a willingness to support department initiatives.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear credit recommendations and communicate professionally with members, team members, and external partners.

Strong financial analysis skills, including the ability to assess cash flow, repayment capacity, leverage, liquidity, profitability, working capital, collateral support, and debt service coverage.

Demonstrated credit judgment and ability to identify key risks, recommend mitigants, and escalate concerns appropriately.

Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, prioritization, and time management in a deadline-driven environment.

Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel, financial spreading tools, reporting tools, and the ability to quickly learn existing and new job-related systems.

Good understanding of lending policy, approval conditions, security documentation, covenant monitoring, regulatory requirements, and file audit expectations.

Results-oriented and flexible in delivering on expectations, managing competing priorities, and supporting time-sensitive lending requirements.

Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

Completion of post-secondary education is preferred, with preference given to a business diploma, business degree, accounting program, finance program, or related education.

2 - 5 years of banking, commercial credit, lending administration, accounting, finance, or related experience is preferred.

Experience preparing or supporting commercial credit applications, annual reviews, renewals, amendments, and financial analysis is preferred.

Experience with commercial lending, agricultural lending, commercial real estate, small business banking, or credit administration is preferred.

Experience reviewing financial statements, corporate tax returns, personal tax returns, net worth statements, borrowing base certificates, rent rolls, appraisals, and other lending support documents is an asset.

APPRES Accreditation, previous experience with DNA, and familiarity with credit union systems are assets.

Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and demonstrated credit aptitude may be considered.

THE FINE PRINT:

This position is in Cochrane, Alberta.

This is a full-time position, 37.5 hours per week.

Working Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.

Office setting with extended computer use, sitting, reaching, standing, minimal lifting, and walking.

Moderate mental effort with periods of high-volume workload, competing deadlines, complex credit analysis, and time-sensitive funding or documentation requirements.
