AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
The AWS Data Center Global Services team is looking for an exceptional individual to contribute to the Controls & Technology organization by joining the Controls Design Engineering team (CDE). The CDE primary responsibility is to track, document, communicate and enhance global data center design standards with a focus on control, automation and electrical power monitoring systems.
At Amazon, we're working to be the most customer-centric company on earth. To get there, we need talented, bright, and driven people. This is your chance to make history by joining a company whose potential has no limits.
The ideal candidate will need a wide-ranging background in data center environmental controls systems, IT infrastructure, networking, mechanical facility operations, electrical power monitoring, project management and strong leadership skills.
If you are passionate about the Customer Experience, think and act with a global perspective and have the ability to contribute to sophisticated innovations in the area of building controls and automation initiatives, this is the challenge you are looking for!
Controls Design Engineering (CDE)
The CDE team provides Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS) design coordination globally.
The team’s goal is to deliver consistent standards for data center controls systems, as well as overall mechanical and electrical design practices. Due to the critical nature and complexity of designing, installing, and maintaining a BMS/EPMS, the CDE team is the primary owner of the associated specification, points list, Basis of Design and scope documents within a large infrastructure engineering team.
- The CDE team is a single point of contact for multiple internal and external customers, uniting the efforts associated with:
- - New construction builds
- - Legacy site enhancement projects
- - Data center service projects
In a continual effort to enhance the controls systems, the CDE team collaborates through design review, drives consistent standards, and collects feedback data to arrive at unified documented solutions. Due to the efforts of maintaining, updating, and distributing BMS/EPMS standards, the CDE engineer will drive significant reductions in change order expense, scope gaps between contractors, construction schedule delays, single-sourced vendor pricing, and reduced vendor project management and engineering labor costs.
- Key job responsibilities
- This position is for an EPMS Controls Design Engineer. Key responsibilities and requirements for this role include:
- - Knowledge of EPMS programming and design, Modbus communication protocol, electrical distribution systems, single-line diagrams, complex electrical concepts, and data center redundancy
- - Review MEP drawings with a focus on electrical drawing sets for EPMS design content
- - Create EPMS scopes of work (SOW), provide RFI support, and review technical vendor proposals during bid review process
- - Coordinate with each regional project manager to review and finalize project SOWs
- - Review electrical Long Lead Equipment (LLE) submittals to ensure EPMS scope is captured
- - Attend Factory Witness Tests (FWTs) and Equipment Qualification Tests (EQTs) to perform EPMS point validation and test EPMS device functionality on first of kind electrical equipment
- - Create, update, and maintain controls points list and specifications, EPMS drawing templates, Basis of Design (BOD) documentation, and project specific SOW documents
- - Develop and disseminate specification documents for global projects
- - Lead and facilitate collaboration with multiple teams including construction, programmers, MEP/ACS engineers, and team managers as necessary to accomplish initiative goals
- - Manage and prioritize requests for information on new construction builds, existing site facilities support, and legacy site enhancement projects
- - Serve as central point of contact for multiple internal and external groups regarding EPMS design standards
- - Ability to successfully operate in high security critical environments while maximizing productivity.
- - Drive innovation of new solutions to support initiatives, team, and company goals
- - Interaction with AWS cloud services and other applications to present, archive and analyze accumulated data
- - Anticipate roadblocks and risks while providing escalation management
- - Travel globally as needed to manage and support project initiatives
- A day in the life
- As a Controls Design Engineer, you'll focus on electrical power monitoring system (EPMS) design coordination across our global data center portfolio. Your day might include reviewing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) drawings to ensure EPMS design requirements are captured, collaborating with regional project managers to refine project scopes, or attending factory and equipment qualification tests to validate monitoring device functionality. You'll work across new construction builds, legacy site enhancements, and ongoing facility support projects—sometimes coordinating with construction teams and external vendors, other times developing standardized documentation that will be used across our entire infrastructure. You'll also interact with AWS applications to analyze accumulated data and present findings to stakeholders, all while identifying potential roadblocks and managing escalations to keep projects on track.
- About the team
- We are a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers dedicated to delivering the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost. Our Controls Design Engineering team serves as the central point of contact for building management and electrical power monitoring system standards globally. We collaborate with multiple internal and external groups—from construction teams to programmers to facility operations—to ensure consistent, innovative design practices across all AWS data centers. Our vision is to continuously enhance controls systems through unified documentation, design reviews, and feedback collection, ultimately reducing change orders, scope gaps, and project delays. By joining our team, you'll contribute to infrastructure that supports the innovation our customers rely on every day.
- Why AWS?
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. We pioneered cloud computing and never stopped innovating — that’s why customers from the most successful startups to Global 500 companies trust our robust suite of products and services to power their businesses.
- Diverse Experiences
- Amazon values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn’t followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don’t let it stop you from applying.
