Course: LING 201 – Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits) section 001
Course details: General introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of human language. Covers the core theoretical subfields of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Also provides background on other subfields including sociolinguistics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, linguistic variation, and language acquisition.
Teaching Schedule : Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 01:35PM - 02:25 PM
Course Start/End Date: January 5, 2027 to April 14, 2027
Contract Dates: January 5, 2027 - May 5, 2027
Location: TBA
Salary (current rate for 3-credit course teaching): $11,824

Position Summary:
A Course assignment includes all or part of the following teaching activities:
a) preparation of the Course and Course plan;
b) delivery of the Course;
c) evaluation of students;
d) submitting to the University a report on student attendance and student grades;
e) supervision of Teaching Assistants or any other teaching support staff;
f) upon request, review of students’ grades;
g) meeting with students, being available to answer questions and give advice concerning Course content and requirements;
Employees shall perform their duties in compliance with the Pedagogical Regulation and as specified in the administrative directives of the Hiring Unit. An Employee shall use appropriate pedagogical methods and material.
Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs): Successful completion of at least PhD Evaluation 1 or equivalent experience.
Experience: University classroom teaching experience or equivalent. Documented research experience in linguistic theory.
Other: Successful completion of graduate level coursework that covers current issues in linguistic theory and its interface with related fields, theoretical foundations in linguistic theory, basic tools of linguistic analysis, and the development of argumentation in linguistic theory.

Course details: Transcription, identification, and production of speech sounds. Introduction to the acoustic properties of speech sounds, acoustic analysis of speech, and auditory phonetics.

Course details: Introduction to the study of generative syntax of natural languages, emphasizing basic concepts and formalism: phrase structure rules, transformations, and conditions on rules.
