About Ethos
Ethos is a leading life insurance technology company on a mission to protect families by democratizing access to life insurance and empowering agents at scale. With its robust three-sided technology platform, Ethos is transforming the life insurance experience for consumers, agents, and carriers alike. Ethos offers instant, accessible products and a seamless online process that requires no medical exams and just a few health questions; it eliminates traditional barriers, making it easier than ever for everyone to protect their families. Ethos is redefining how life insurance is bought, sold, and underwritten.
About the role
Ethos is hiring a Director, Marketing Process & Technology to join our Compliance department as a senior leader. This person will own marketing compliance review at Ethos end to end: the process, the technology, and the majority of the reviews themselves. You will be both a hands-on senior reviewer and the owner of the system that performs the review, and you will be charged with a clear mandate: move marketing review toward automation through AI as far as it can defensibly go, without loosening the standard.
You will serve as business owner of the AI tool Ethos uses for marketing review, and you will be measured, in part, on how much of the review volume that tool can absorb and how reliably it performs. At the same time, you will personally handle the judgment calls, escalations, and novel questions that automation should not decide. Beyond the tool, you own the marketing review process itself: intake, prioritization, review standards, approved language, recordkeeping, and the working relationship with Marketing/Brand/business teams. This is a player-coach role. You will carry a real review load from day one and will eventually hire and oversee a compliance analyst to support you, which means building the standards, playbooks, and training that make the work delegable. You will be expected to drive thought leadership on marketing compliance matters across Ethos. Importantly, the candidate must be risk-minded, be a team player, confident in determining acceptable risk, think creatively to always find solutions, and be technology forward.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Own the AI marketing review tool and drive the shift toward automated, AI review, including:
Act as business owner and administrator of the tool, including configuration, rule and prompt tuning, testing, and release management
Define the automation tiers : what AI approves outright, what AI reviews subject to human confirmation, and what always requires human review
Continuously improve automated review quality by measuring the tool’s output against human review, tuning to reduce missed issues, and expanding the categories of content it can handle
Establish human-in-the-loop thresholds, sampling, and ongoing QA to validate that the tool remains reliable as content, products, and regulations change
Own the auditability of AI-assisted decisions so that any approval can be reconstructed and defended to an examiner, auditor, or carrier
Partner with vendors and with internal engineering and data teams on integration, evaluation, and roadmap
Grow the share of reviews completed through automation as a primary, measured objective
Own the marketing compliance review process, including:
Design and run intake for all marketing review requests, with clear SLAs, routing, and prioritization
Maintain the review standards of record , including: review criteria, required disclosures, and the library of pre-approved claims and language
Personally perform the majority of reviews and serve as decision-maker on close calls, documenting rationale so decisions accumulate into usable precedent
Maintain the recordkeeping and audit trail of submissions, versions, approvals, and conditions of approval
Measure and improve throughput, cycle time, and review quality
Cover the full range of marketing content subject to review, including:
Consumer-facing marketing across paid media, lifecycle and email, web, brand, and social
Agent and producer-facing materials, including recruiting, training, and sales support content
Partner, carrier, and co-branded campaign materials
Product and disclosure content embedded in online flows, including rate and quote presentation and required disclosures
Keep standards evergreen, including:
Translate insurance advertising and marketing regulatory change into concrete review criteria, tool rules, and updated approved language
Refresh disclosure and claim libraries as products, state approvals, and carrier requirements change
Partner across the business, including:
Embed compliance early in the marketing lifecycle, at brief and concept stage rather than at launch
Act as trusted advisor and thought leader to Marketing, Brand, Growth, Product, and Legal
Partner with the Compliance Risk Management team so that marketing review controls are documented and independently tested
Support advertising filings where required, along with market conduct exams, regulatory requests, carrier requests, and data calls
Build and lead the function. You will operate as a hands-on player-coach, then hire, onboard, develop, and manage a compliance analyst as volume and automation maturity allow
Own marketing compliance reporting and governance, including review volume, cycle time, automation rate, quality and error rates, and KRIs
Assist in drafting and updating marketing compliance policies and procedures
Provide general compliance support, as needed, across the team and company, including research and provisioning of compliance guidance across Ethos
Qualifications and Skills:
12+ years of relevant Compliance work experience in the insurance industry, including significant hands-on marketing and advertising review experience
Deep expertise in insurance regulatory marketing compliance, including advertising requirements, required disclosures, and advertising filing obligations across states
Demonstrated ownership of a high-volume marketing or advertising review function, including the standards and the workflow behind it
Hands-on experience putting AI or automation to work inside a compliance review workflow - configuring it, measuring it, and improving it, rather than simply using it
Ability to define and defend where automation is appropriate and where human judgment is required, and to evidence that distinction to auditors, examiners, and carriers
Strong process design instincts, including: intake, SLAs, prioritization, throughput, and cycle time
Comfort working with data to measure review quality and automation performance, and to report both to senior leadership
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Persuasive communicator and thought leader who can hold a firm line with Marketing without becoming a bottleneck
Be highly responsive and service-oriented, with a demonstrated ability to maintain strong working relationships with demanding internal clients
Experience hiring, developing, and managing an analyst, or clear readiness to do so
Possess sound and practical business judgment, and confidence in determining acceptable risk
Ability to multi-task and work independently or with cross-functional teams, while adapting quickly to ambiguous and rapidly changing environments
Attention to detail
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines
