Director of Global Partnerships

Organization Summary:

PAX sapiens is on a mission to prevent predictable global catastrophes. We use direct grantmaking and coordination tools such as convenings, conferences, and information sharing systems to advance human security and sustainable peace. In support of our mission, our focus areas include strengthening global systems for pandemic prevention, preventing nuclear war, and promoting better US-Chinese relationships in global fora specifically. We focus on hiring talented and impact-driven professionals who are passionate about driving positive change.

Primary Role:

The Director of External Engagement will drive PAX’s partnerships and external relations work including the creation of philanthropic partnerships advancing PAX’s mission and working with PAX program teams to oversee PAX’s grantmaking work, support development and fundraising, and manage government engagement. The Director of External Engagement will establish global partnerships and help drive impact while working with our legal and compliance team to ensure that PAX external engagement complies with relevant laws. The Director of External Engagement will work to build and manage a team that will deliver these collective goals, and plan and execute budgets and activities that deliver the program goals.

Compensation:

The hiring range for this position is $150,000 - $180,000 annually.

Location:

This position is located at the PAX sapiens office in Washington, DC. The PAX office operates on a hybrid in-office/work from home model with Tuesdays and Thursdays in-office.

Primary Responsibilities:

Supporting the creation of philanthropic consortia advancing PAX’s issue areas of focus

Identify and engage with other donors interested in the same issues that PAX works on and facilitate cooperative systems of mutual support.

Grants strategy

Work with PAX program staff to manage the identification of grantees and design grants for impact.

Work with PAX administrative staff to oversee the execution and monitoring of grant agreements.

Development

Work with the program teams to identify external government, foundation, and private donors who may be interested in supporting PAX work.

Manage staff and contractors to support program teams in successful application and engagement with funders

Institutional engagement

Develop a strategy and track PAX engagement with government officials and multilateral institutions in the United States and internationally to reduce the risk of cross-program friction and maximize potential impact.

Build partnerships with key private sector institutions and industries as relevant to PAX mission and ambition

Work with the compliance office of PAX to ensure compliance with U.S. and global laws and regulations (including lobbying, Foreign Agents, etc.).

Cross-functional leadership

Support other cross-functional efforts contributing to organizational health, sustainability, and growth, contributing to planning processes, regular management and ad hoc initiatives.

Work with other senior leaders to build and position the PAX sapiens DC office in line with the organization’s mission and ambitions.

Program administration

Develop and manage annual budgets sufficient to deliver the goals of the program.

Develop and manage a staff and set of contractors sufficient to deliver the goals of the program.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Competences:

Education & Experience

Graduate degree in international relations, nonprofit management, or other relevant topic or at least 10 years of experience in military, government, or organizational roles that demonstrate equivalent skills and capacities.

Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in international relations or social impact work in the nonprofit sector, in government, or in private sector government engagement roles.

Demonstrated expert-level familiarity with the key donors, US government entities, and nonprofit organizations working in peacebuilding, crisis management, and negotiation work.

History of developing or managing a successful fundraising strategy for organizations working on social impact.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

Deep knowledge of the key stakeholders working on conflict risk and risk reduction including donors, government agencies, and international organizations with a concentration on US, European, and East Asian actors.

Understanding of strategic partnership building an the ability to execute strategic and goal-oriented engagement through finding true win-win partnerships with external actors.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills.

Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively across cultures, time zones, and geographically distributed teams.

Commitment to fostering an inclusive, engaging, and mission-driven workplace culture.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in nonprofit organizations, mission-driven organizations, or international organizations.

Experience working with geographically distributed or international teams.

Mandarin language proficiency is a strong plus. German and/or Spanish language proficiency is a plus.

Physical Work Demands:

Able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.

Able to bend at the waist and reach on a daily basis.

Able to lift and move up to 25 lbs regularly.
