About This Position

The Electrician II position plays a vital role in maintaining and repairing electrical systems across various City of Austin facilities, including EMS and Fire Stations. This position involves a range of electrical tasks, collaborating with facility managers and staff. This includes maintenance, repairs, inspections, and coordination of electrical work in City of Austin buildings. Job Description:

Electrician II

Purpose:

Under general supervision, this position leads and performs tasks in repair, installation, maintenance, and testing of electrical equipment and circuits.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Pulls wire, conduit, cable, etc.
  • Connects power cables to equipment, including generators, alarm systems, lighting systems, etc.
  • Conducts on-the-job training. Assigns duties and monitor task completion.
  • Uses various electrician hand tools, including snips, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, etc.
  • Operates soldering tools.
  • Reads profiles and blueprints.
  • Measures, cuts, and bends wire and conduit using rulers and hand tools.
  • Installs wire, conduit, coaxial cable, etc. Installs conductors.
  • Splices electrical wiring, including stripping insulation, twisting wires together, soldering tape, appling terminal caps, etc.
  • Operates various power saws, such as radial arm, skill, etc.
  • Operates drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc.
  • Operates electronic testing equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of basic electricity.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of building codes applicable to level of construction.
  • Knowledge of equipment tools and materials used in electrical maintenance and construction.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools common to the electrical trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and schematics

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years experience in repair, testing, maintenance or installation or electrical systems or equipment.
  • One (1) additional year of relevant work experience may substitute for one (1) year of the required education, with a maximum substitution of four (4) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

Appropriate licensing may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • State of Texas Journeymen or Master Electrician Licensure or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Extensive experience troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing of electrical systems in commercial buildings.
  • Experience in the use of a Computerized Maintenance Management System(CMMS) i.e. work order system or software.
  • Experience with the National Electrical Code (NEC), City of Austin Building Codes and ordinances.
  • Experience pulling permits and coordinating building inspections.
  • Experience working as a service electrician for a municipality or other government entity.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

  • Driving Requirement:
  • This position requires a Texas Driver’s License in good standing or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Classification:
  • This position is classified as NON-EXEMPT.

Overtime may be required with or without notice.

Rotational on call and call back is required by the position.
