Electrical Panel Design Engineer

  • Department: R&D – Data Center Technology
  • Location: Daleville, VA
  • Reports To: R&D Electrical/Controls Manager

About Us:

Munters is a global leader in climate solutions for mission-critical processes. We offer innovative, efficient and sustainable solutions for customers in industries where controlling indoor humidity, temperature and energy efficiency is mission critical. Climate control systems often account for a large percentage of energy consumption in many of our customers’ operations. With an optimal climate system, we can help them to more efficiently use energy or water resources and thereby reduce their climate and environmental impact. Sustainability is an important part of Munters’ business strategy and value creation. We pride ourselves on fostering a dynamic and inclusive work environment where interns are valued members of the team and are given meaningful projects to work on.

  • Job Summary:
  • The Electrical Panel Design Engineer will be responsible for developing and maintaining intelligent electrical panel designs for Munters chiller and data center products. This role will establish and implement a standardized panel design methodology using AutoCAD Electrical , with a focus on generating accurate electrical design data that can support panel manufacturing, BOM generation, wiring-kit development, and future wiring automation.

The role will also support the evaluation and implementation of SolidWorks Electrical as a potential long-term platform for integrating electrical and mechanical design.

This position requires a highly experienced electrical panel designer with strong practical knowledge of industrial control panels, intelligent electrical CAD, electrical component libraries, and manufacturing requirements. The individual must be capable of developing panel layouts using actual manufacturer component models, including vendor STEP files, while ensuring designs are practical, manufacturable, and automation ready.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical Panel Design & Development

  • Develop detailed electrical panel layouts for chiller and other data center products using AutoCAD Electrical .
  • Create intelligent panel designs using actual electrical components and manufacturer data, including vendor STEP/3D models where appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain electrical component libraries, footprints, symbols, and associated intelligent design data.
  • Establish standardized panel layout practices for component placement, DIN rail, Panduit, wiring, terminal blocks, clearances, mounting, and manufacturability.
  • Ensure panel designs accurately reflect the components and configurations required for production.
  • Work closely with Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Product Engineering, Project Engineering, and Production to ensure designs are complete and production-ready.
  • Incorporate production and first-build feedback into controlled design updates and continuously improve panel designs.

Wiring Design Automation

  • Develop panel design methodologies that provide the electrical data required to support automated wiring-kit generation and production.
  • Establish the design data structure necessary to capture wire connectivity, terminal information, component identification, wire types, wire sizes, labeling, and related manufacturing information.
  • Work with the R&D team to develop the interface between electrical panel design and Komax wiring automation.
  • Help eliminate manual post-release development of wiring kits by ensuring required wiring information is captured as part of the electrical design process.
  • Support the longer-term objective of extending automated wiring data from panel wiring to complete system wiring harnesses.

AutoCAD Electrical Implementation

  • Leverage the AutoCAD Electrical Toolset to its full capability for intelligent electrical and panel design.
  • Establish and maintain AutoCAD Electrical project standards, templates, symbol libraries, component databases, and panel layout standards.
  • Work with the Amesbury Electrical team to leverage their existing AutoCAD Electrical database, intelligent panel design practices, and established methodology.
  • Help establish a scalable AutoCAD Electrical environment that can be adopted across applicable Munters product development teams.

SolidWorks Electrical Evaluation

  • Support the evaluation and beta implementation of SolidWorks Electrical as a potential long-term electrical/mechanical design platform.
  • Develop representative panel designs in SolidWorks Electrical and evaluate its ability to integrate with SolidWorks Mechanical.
  • Assess the ability of SolidWorks Electrical to maintain electrical intelligence while supporting mechanical panel design requirements.
  • Evaluate data flow between electrical design, mechanical design, BOM generation, manufacturing, and wiring automation.
  • Provide recommendations regarding the appropriate long-term electrical/mechanical CAD strategy.

Manufacturing & Design for Assembly

  • Ensure panel designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly efficiency, serviceability, and quality.
  • Work directly with panel builders and Production to understand manufacturing requirements and incorporate practical shop-floor knowledge into designs.
  • Support first-article panel builds and resolve design issues identified during production validation.
  • Establish design standards that reduce rework, design variation, and production adjustments.

Required Skills & Attributes:

  • Deep practical knowledge of electrical panel design and manufacturing.
  • Ability to develop intelligent designs rather than simply produce drawings.
  • Strong understanding of the relationship between electrical design data, mechanical design, BOMs, manufacturing, and automated wiring.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to establish standards and processes where they do not currently exist.
  • Strong attention to detail and design accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively with Engineering, R&D, Production, Supply Chain, and external suppliers.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Self-directed with the ability to drive technical initiatives across functional boundaries.
  • Comfortable working in both current-state production support and longer-term technology development.

Education Requirements/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related technical discipline preferred; equivalent extensive industry experience will be considered.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience designing industrial electrical control panels , preferably in a manufacturing or engineered-product environment.
  • Extensive experience with AutoCAD Electrical , including the Electrical Toolset.
  • Demonstrated experience developing intelligent electrical panel layouts , not simply 2D drafting.
  • Strong experience using manufacturer component information and vendor STEP/3D models to develop accurate panel layouts.
  • Strong understanding of industrial electrical components, including PLCs, power distribution equipment, drives, contactors, relays, terminal blocks, power supplies, controls, sensors, and associated panel hardware.
  • Experience developing and maintaining electrical component databases, libraries, symbols, footprints, and design standards.
  • SolidWorks Electrical experience is strongly preferred , with the ability to understand and evaluate electrical/mechanical integration.
  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics, panel wiring, terminal design, wire routing, labeling, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Experience supporting first-article builds and translating design requirements into production-ready panel designs.
  • Experience with wiring harness design, automated wire processing, or systems such as Komax is highly desirable.
  • Solid understanding of industrial control panel design and f
