Why Engineering?

Engineering drives the innovation and solutions that power our growth and success, connecting ideas to real-world impact and delivering value at scale. Our Engineers create cutting-edge solutions that make a real difference for millions of customers. Whether it's enhancing mobile apps, leveraging AI and emerging agentic technologies for personalised experiences, or simplifying core systems, our engineers are shaping the future of banking.

We’re not just building tech, we’re building better customer journeys, smarter systems, and a more secure digital future.

Your internship journey

Our Engineering internship is structured differently to all other internships and is designed to give you a real appreciation of what it means to work for us as an Engineer. The programme emphasises agile ways of working and immerses you in a dynamic and collaborative environment in which you’ll get to work in Scrums on real business projects supported by engineering experts.

At the end of the internship, we’ll assess you on what you’ve learned. Complete this successfully and you could be offered a place on our Engineering graduate programme, where you can carry forward the skills you’ve learnt into the next stage of your career.

Over the course of this eight-week programme, you can look forward to:

Actively participating and contributing to real engineering projects

Attending daily stand ups in your scrum project teams to drive real business progress as well as participation in end of sprint demos, retros, and feedback sessions

Developing your engineering skills and application through agile methodologies, AI-assisted engineering practices and NatWest ways of working

The opportunity to attend regular business and engineering spotlight so you can understand how our engineers contribute to the broader business and our customers

Learning about how we operate, and how the contribution of Engineering makes a difference across our business technology functions including Retail, Wealth, Commercial & Institutional and Customer & Operations

Learning how engineers collaborate with AI tools and emerging agentic technologies to solve complex problems while applying human judgement and critical thinking

Building an understanding of the products and services we provide for our customers and colleagues

Attending Engineering specific networking events, social engagements and the opportunity to hear from senior leaders across the bank

How you’ll benefit

We’ll reward you with a starting salary of £29,400 pro rata.

Plus, you can expect to:

Learn from industry experts and immediately apply your learnings

Enrich your learning with access to our Learning Academy

Test and learn new approaches in a safe, inclusive environment

Start building a professional network

Grow your confidence, build your resilience, and elevate your presence

Experience first-hand what it’s like working in a purpose-driven organisation

Clear communication skills, and the ability to break down complex problems and explain your ideas

A curious, logical mindset with a passion for solving problems and exploring emerging technologies, including AI

Confidence working with data, statistics, and experimentation, and evidence-based decision making
