Fabric Engineer Site Role
A Fabric Engineer is a facilities maintenance professional responsible for the upkeep, repair, and maintenance of a building's physical structure and systems. This is a hands-on, site-based position focused on ensuring building infrastructure operates safely and efficiently.
Core Responsibilities
The role typically involves maintaining building fabric and mechanical/electrical systems including HVAC equipment, plumbing, electrical installations, fire safety systems, and general building structure. Day-to-day duties include conducting planned preventative maintenance, responding to reactive maintenance requests, diagnosing faults, performing repairs, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
Key Skills and Qualifications
Most fabric engineers need relevant technical qualifications (City & Guilds, NVQ, or equivalent in building services, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical trades), several years of hands-on maintenance experience, and strong problem-solving abilities. Knowledge of building management systems, electrical and plumbing systems, and health and safety regulations is essential. Many positions require specific certifications depending on the systems maintained.
