TAMIU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with over 8,000 students, located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. The University advances knowledge through research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement, and public service, with an intentional focus on student success and research excellence. This is a fixed-term, non-tenure-track, nine-month Instructional Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering position. Initial appointments may be made for up to three years and renewed contingent upon satisfactory performance and institutional need. Primary duties will include contributing to the BS and MS in Systems Engineering by teaching courses across areas relevant to both programs. Potential teaching areas include operations research, systems simulation, facility layout and logistics, computer-integrated manufacturing, systems engineering management, engineering computational tools, advanced multivariate statistics, and advanced modeling and simulation. Instruction will emphasize project-based and hands-on learning. The successful candidate will also contribute to Senior Design projects as assigned. Duties also include teaching general engineering and other courses as needed by the School; mentoring students; and supporting experiential learning, curriculum development, ABET assessment and continuous improvement, recruitment, and School service. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

The School of Engineering offers ABET-accredited programs in Systems, Computer, and Petroleum Engineering. Its BS in Computer Science and MS in Systems Engineering launched in 2026, and its BS in Civil Engineering launches in 2027. This position is part of a strategic faculty expansion in the School of Engineering to hire 10 permanent faculty members, eight tenure-track and two instructional, beginning Fall 2027.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related discipline by the appointment start date. Applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment. Candidates must demonstrate preparation to teach Systems Engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to develop and deliver applied, project-based, and hands-on engineering instruction. Experience or ability to mentor Senior Design or other applied student projects, use computational or simulation tools in instruction, contribute to ABET assessment and continuous improvement, or support curriculum development is highly desirable.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the University.

Application Process

The completed employment application must include:

  • A letter of interest or cover letter that addresses the candidate’s qualifications for the position.
  • Current curriculum vitae.
  • Unofficial graduate transcripts documenting the conferred degree or progress toward completion of the required doctorate.
  • Names and contact information of three current professional references.
  • Statement of teaching experience and philosophy, including approaches to project-based and hands-on engineering education.

Applications must be submitted online at https://www.tamiu.edu/admins/ohr/employment/. Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.
