Duties

Serving as a Marine Machinery Mechanic WG-5334-10 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Office of the Associate Director for Training Ops (TOPS), Training Management Operations Directorate (TMO), Office of Charleston Operations (CHS), Maritime and General Training Branch (MGT), located in North Charleston, South Carolina. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Marine Machinery Mechanic responsible for troubleshooting, disassembling, reassembling, installing, adjusting, modifying, maintaining, repairing, and testing complex marine engines and related equipment. Typical duties include: Troubleshooting, disassembling, repairing, reassembling, installing, adjusting, and testing complex gasoline and diesel marine engines, propulsion machinery, generators, pumps, fuel, bilge, hydraulic steering, trim, and related vessel systems using technical manuals, work orders, onboard engine computers, diagnostic equipment, test instruments, and accepted trade practices. Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on marine vessels and associated components, including motor systems, fluids, filters, water pumps, thermostats, sacrificial anodes, sensors, relays, propellers, lower units, lighting systems, fuel tanks, vents, safety devices, gauges, alarms, and emergency response equipment. Installing, removing, diagnosing, repairing, and replacing vessel electronic and communication/navigation systems, including radar, sonar, GPS, AIS, VHF distress radio systems, transducers, control components, and related equipment. Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vessel trailers, including brake systems, lighting systems, tires, bearings, couplers, and bunks, and ensure assigned boats, trailers, and related equipment meet safety, operational, and compliance requirements. In addition to the above requirements, applicants will be assessed based on their knowledge of the job elements identified below: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc., including blueprint reading Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Troubleshooting The job elements can be assessed using the following types of experience: Qualified applicants must have experience applying knowledge of marine machinery assembly, installation, and repair to diagnose malfunctions and perform repairs on systems such as diesel and gasoline marine engines, propulsion machinery, generators, pumps, fuel systems, bilge systems, hydraulic steering systems, trailers, and related vessel components. Applicants must be able to interpret technical manuals, specifications, work orders, shop directives, and other instructions; use and maintain hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and measuring devices; identify and select appropriate materials and replacement parts; and apply troubleshooting methods to determine the nature and extent of repairs needed. All requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
