Purpose of Role

The medical lead/ MSL is responsible for establishing a respected and valued presence with healthcare professionals, Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), scientific societies, and other relevant external stakeholders within the assigned therapeutic area.

The medical lead/ MSL will support the development and implementation of the local medical strategic plan for assigned products, in alignment with the global medical strategy and incorporating insights from local key stakeholders.

The medical lead/ MSL will engage in fair-balanced scientific exchange and provide scientific and medical support for current and future portfolio activities. Through a thorough understanding of the patient journey, treatment landscape, clinical practice, unmet medical needs, and evolving scientific trends, the medical lead/ MSL will generate actionable insights to help shape local medical strategy and support broader business objectives.

This role is particularly suited to an individual who is able to work independently, think strategically and collaborate effectively with local and global cross-functional teams.

Key Accountabilities:

Opinion Leader Engagement

  • Identify, develop and maintain collaborative relationships with current and future Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), healthcare professionals, relevant medical groups, scientific societies, and other key stakeholders.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive stakeholder engagement plans aligned with the local medical strategy.
  • Conduct compliant, high-quality scientific exchange focused on disease state education, emerging science, treatment trends, and relevant therapies.
  • Maintain a strong field presence, with approximately 50% of time dedicated to external stakeholder engagement.
  • Represent the client at scientific congresses, advisory boards, medical meetings, and other relevant scientific forums.
  • Facilitate interactions between healthcare professionals and internal medical experts where appropriate.

Scientific Communication and Medical Education

  • Support the development and execution of scientific and medical communication activities in close collaboration with local and global Medical Affairs teams.
  • Contribute to local publication planning and scientific communication activities within the assigned therapeutic area.
  • Develop impactful scientific and medical educational messages, activities, presentations, and materials.
  • Support medical education initiatives for relevant healthcare stakeholders.
  • Develop medical training strategy and local medical training content as required.
  • Deliver scientific and medical training to internal stakeholders where appropriate.
  • Provide medical review and approval of promotional, scientific, and educational materials in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.
  • Respond to requests for medical information regarding approved products and investigational or non-approved products/indications in a compliant and scientifically balanced manner.

Scientific Expertise and Medical Strategy

  • Support the development and implementation of local medical plans for assigned products in alignment with global medical strategy.
  • Identify unmet medical, educational, and research needs through interpretation of relevant scientific data and insights from the medical community.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the patient journey, treatment landscape, clinical practice patterns, and unmet patient needs within the assigned therapeutic area.
  • Identify, collect and communicate medical insights related to patient journey, treatment trends, clinical practice, research activities, and the competitive landscape.
  • Monitor scientific developments and capture relevant insights from medical and scientific congresses.
  • Translate field insights into actionable recommendations that support local and global medical strategy.
  • Participate as a Medical Affairs representative in relevant strategic and cross-functional working groups.

Clinical Research and Evidence Generation

  • Participate in the development and monitoring of local clinical evidence generation activities.
  • Support and coordinate local studies, including observational studies, clinical studies, and Real-World Data (RWD) initiatives, as appropriate.
  • Identify relevant research needs and opportunities in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

Cross Functional Support

  • Collaborate closely with local and global Medical Affairs teams and other cross-functional stakeholders to ensure alignment of medical activities and strategy.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with relevant functions including Regulatory, Marketing, Market Access and Pricing, Pharmacovigilance, Research & Development, Commercial, Business Development, Ethics and Compliance, and other teams as applicable.
  • Provide medical and scientific expertise and insights to support cross-functional planning and decision-making.Contribute to strategic working groups and provide Medical Affairs input into relevant business activities.
  • Support the development and implementation of systems, processes, and ways of working that enable effective Medical Affairs activities.

Compliance

  • Operate in a highly ethical manner and comply with all laws, regulations, industry codes, and company policies.
  • Complete mandatory training within assigned timelines.
  • Ensure all scientific exchanges and stakeholder interactions are appropriately documented.
  • Adhere to internal standard processes and regulatory compliance requirements across all countries within the assigned region.

Qualifications:

  • An advanced doctoral degree (MD, PhD, PharmD) or MSc is preferred
  • 4-5 years of previous MSL experience required.
  • Regional or multi-country Medical Affairs experience is an advantage.
  • Previous therapeutic area experience in neurological disorders, respiratory disorders and/or rare or orphan conditions is preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building relationships and participating in credible scientific exchange with multiple audiences.
  • Strong strategic and analytical capabilities with the ability to translate scientific information and field insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present medical and scientific information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proactive and independent working style, with the ability to function effectively both independently and within a team.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to work with local and global stakeholders.
  • Experience with medical strategy, evidence generation, medical education, publications, and/or medical review activities is an advantage.
  • Fluent in English and fluency in the language of a local country is required. Additional regional languages are an advantage.
  • Able and willing to travel nationally and internationally as required, up to ~50% of time
