The range listed reflects the entire range and typical placement is entry to mid range.
Pay Rate: $100/hr
- Position Purpose
- The Relief Municipal Judge performs judicial functions and serves as a trial judge; adheres to sound governance practices.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs judicial functions of the Arvada Municipal Court consistent with the Code of Judicial Conduct and the charter and ordinances of the City of Arvada.
- Sits as a relief judge of the court to adjudicate traffic, criminal, parking, and other municipal code violations and as a hearing officer.
- Conducts hearings on motions, trials to the court, jury trials, and other requisite judicial duties.
- Promotes an organizational work environment where business practices, decisions, and work assignments are aligned with the City’s vision, mission, values, core competencies and strategic plan.
- Exercises sound judgment and decision making within the scope of assigned authority.
- Demonstrates leadership and initiative in the course of performing the duties of the position.
- Travels to and attends team and organizational meetings, training, events and activities and appropriately and professionally represents the department.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of the Arvada Municipal Code, Colorado Rules of Evidence, the Colorado Rules of Criminal Procedure, the Colorado Rules of Municipal Procedure, and the general ordinance, statutory, and case law in Colorado.
- Strong knowledge of the principles and procedures of municipal, civil, business law, and constitutional law.
- Strong knowledge of judicial procedure and Colorado and federal rules of evidence.
- Thorough knowledge of local ordinances, state and federal laws, and constitutional provisions affecting municipal operations.
- Solid knowledge of financial and budget development and management procedures.
- Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Ability to work with various personalities that may appear before the court, and craft appropriate decisions and sentences within legal guidelines.
- Ability to work with other departments on procedures and ordinances consistent with judicial independence.
- Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.

- Must be a licensed member of the Colorado State Bar Association in good standing

- Education Required
- College degree and graduation from a nationally accredited school of law
- Work Experience Related
- Five (5) years of experience as an attorney specializing in criminal law either as a prosecutor or a criminal defense attorney; and extensive knowledge of Colorado criminal procedure and law. Must be a resident of Arvada or become a resident of Arvada within six (6) months of appointment. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

- Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal
- Hazards
- Minimal exposure to hazards are typically found in general office environment where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident
- Work Environment
- Exposure to routine office noise and equipment

The City of Arvada does not offer benefits to temporary and/or seasonal employees. Temporary, Variable Hour and Health Plan Eligible employees will earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum cap of 48 hours.
