Description of Work
Love being outside and exploring some of North Carolina’s most beautiful places? Maybe you’d like working at a state park. The Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic team member to fill our Park Ranger position. A Park Ranger provides educational programming, natural resource management, law enforcement/emergency services, seasonal employee supervision, administration, operations, and maintenance. The Park Ranger is a commissioned law enforcement officer and will enforce state laws and park regulations through patrol, education, warnings, citations, and arrests.
- Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Researching the natural and cultural resources found at the park and developing and implementing resource management plans to include prescribed fire and invasive species removal.
- Preparing and conducting environmental interpretation and education programming.
- Performing and directing emergency medical response and emergency rescue in the park and other parks upon need.
- Assisting with maintenance of park facilities for routine maintenance and minor repairs, as needed.
- Performing in operations, facility upkeep and/or administration of parks, attractions, other outdoor recreation areas or visitor focused programs.
- Issuing facility permits, open, and close facilities, and purchasing equipment and/or supplies.
- May hire and supervise temporary/seasonal employees.

Recruitment Range: $50,000.00 - $54,944.00

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:
- Obtain successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.
- Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and meet DOA Fleet Safety Policy and guidelines to drive a state vehicle.
- Ability to successfully complete various required training for NC State Park Ranger within the required timeframes.
Position/Physical Requirements:
Prior to Employment: Selected candidates are required to have successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.
Within 18 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
- Typical work schedule is Saturday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM; includes day, evening, weekends and holiday shift on a rotating schedule.
- Must work weekends and holidays on-call rotation.
- Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Considered Emergency Staff and may be required to work on adverse weather days, during emergencies, and special events.
- Some positions may have housing available, and it is a requirement that the candidate who accepts the position reside in the housing provided.
Within 12 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:
- Successfully complete CPR Certification
- Successfully complete Wildland Fire Suppression
- Successfully complete Division Sponsored S-112 Chainsaw Training
Within 30 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:
- Successfully complete Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
- Successfully complete Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR)

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree preferably in Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science from an appropriately accredited institution.
OR
Equivalent combination of training and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
