Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a Part-Time Library Assistant, Circulation & Reserves to join Fleet Library.

As our Part-Time Library Assistant, you will be responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the Circulation/Reserve Desk. You will assist and guide all library users with a wide variety of services, serve as a central point of contact for a variety of routine and non-routine library questions, open and close the library as scheduled, and actively participate in the processing of Reserves and the use of audiovisual equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:

  • Monitor the circulation/reserve desk and first-floor reading room. Open and close the library as needed; ensure equipment is ready for operation.
  • Perform circulation functions such as checking books in and out, shelf reading, and other special tasks as assigned. Maintain awareness of library policies and practices.
  • Assist students, staff, and faculty with directional and policy questions. Refer inquiries to librarians and other appropriate contacts.
  • Support Curricular Video Reserves and Course Reserves functions as needed, including but not limited to: digitizing films, scanning texts, and uploading materials to course platforms.
  • Provide support and supervision for student employees.
  • Understand and be familiar with library policies and procedures; ensure that policies are carried out; and make recommendations for modifications to the supervisor.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in customer service, preferably in a college or library setting, are required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum educational requirement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency with computer software such as Google or Microsoft suite; ability to quickly learn new software applications.
  • Familiarity with basic audiovisual and scanning equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with multiple diverse populations in an artistic setting.
  • Proficiency with library management systems, preferably Sierra, is preferred.
  • Library shelving and shelf reading experience is preferred.
  • Audiovisual digitization and file management experience is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience (other staff and/or student employees) is preferred.
  • Commitment to supporting an inclusive work environment and the ability to work respectfully and effectively across differences in background, role, and perspective.
