About Us:

The Perioperative Department at Valley Children’s Hospital is a robust division, incorporating many procedural areas and their associated support services. Periop supports every service line within the hospital, providing care to patients in the Central Valley and its surrounding areas and collaborates with outlying facilities to accomplish our mission to provide the best care to our patients, always.

The Day Surgery process begins with pre-op admitting of the patient, which is inclusive of assessing the patient pre-surgery and preparing them for their surgical day. The most common surgeries are ENT followed by orthopedics and general surgeries and the patients range in age from newborn to young adult.

Post-op phase II is a separate area from the admitting location and requires an entirely different set of skills. This phase of recovery occurs when the patient is awake and transferred from the recovery room to day surgery post-op where the patient is reunited with family and we begin preparing for discharge.

Periop as a whole employs a vast number of skilled individuals within various units, including registered nurses (RNs), operating room technicians (ORTs), special procedure technicians, sterile processing technicians, imaging technicians, and more. Each division works to provide their team with advancement opportunities that encourage self-development, offer process improvements, and ultimately work to improve outcomes for our patients.

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for providing competent nursing care. Responsible for coordination of the patient's plan of care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing interventions that lead to established outcomes. This position practices under the direction of the designated nurse executive, within the scope of the Nursing Practice Act, and in accordance with Valley Children's Hospital policies. Qualifications :

The Day Surgery RN position will be designated specifically as a Preoperative Evaluation Process (PEP) RN role. This position will be responsible for conducting preoperative evaluations and readiness assessments, coordinating required testing and clearances, completing medication review, and providing patient and family education to ensure surgical preparedness. In addition to these PEP responsibilities, this role will maintain the competencies necessary to support Day Surgery RN staffing needs and may be assigned to provide direct patient care in the Day Surgery unit as operational needs require. This flexibility will support continuity of care, staffing coverage, and operational efficiency while maintaining a primary focus on the preoperative evaluation process.
