Research Safety Lead Chemical Hygiene Officer

Overview:

Job Description Summary:

Leads institutional chemical hygiene, laboratory safety, and hazardous materials management to promote safe research operations and ensure regulatory compliance. Serves as the institutional subject matter expert and collaborates with Research Protections and key partners to strengthen research safety programs and practices.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

• •Lead the development, implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of institutional chemical hygiene and laboratory safety programs.
• •Evaluate research environments and operations to identify hazards, assess risk, and establish effective safety controls.
• •Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, occupational safety, hazardous materials, and laboratory regulations and standards.
• •Direct laboratory safety inspections, program assessments, incident reviews, and corrective actions to reduce risk and prevent recurrence.
• •Develop and oversee education, guidance, and technical resources that support safe laboratory practices and emergency preparedness.
• •Provide technical leadership and direction to research safety personnel and collaborates with organizational leaders and external authorities to support effective program outcomes.

Education Requirement:

• •Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Environmental Health and Safety, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
• •Master’s Degree, preferred.

Certifications:

Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification must be obtained within the first 12 months of employment.

Skills:

• •Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• •Extensive knowledge of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Laboratory Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1450, and Hazard Communication requirements.
• •Strong knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hazardous waste regulations, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) requirements, and environmental compliance programs.
• •Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) laboratory fire protection standards and emergency preparedness practices.
• •Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) hazardous materials transportation and shipping requirements.

Experience:

• •Three years of relevant program or project support experience, required.
• •Demonstrated experience ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements governing laboratory operations, including requirements established by the OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, DEA, and applicable state authorities, required.
