The School Principal provides leadership and management of all educational programs at the Lenoir Youth Development Center. This role oversees instructional staff, ensures compliance with state standards and special education requirements, and fosters a safe, structured learning environment for youth in the juvenile justice system. The principal supervises and evaluates teachers and support staff, coordinates professional development, and manages school operations including curriculum and data analysis. The position also collaborates with community schools, colleges, and state education officials to support student transitions and enhance learning opportunities.

Serving as the instructional leader, the principal promotes academic excellence, staff effectiveness, and positive student outcomes in alignment with the mission of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This is a 12 month position paid on the state teachers’ salary scale plus a 6% supplement.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position. Work hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm.

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.

The Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) is REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Management Preferences, including Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), are not required but may be used to determine the pool of most qualified applicants. Management Preferences:

Experience leading teachers in delivering effective instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

Knowledge of policies and/or procedures related to Exceptional Children (EC) services.

Experience supervising instructional personnel to enhance educational outcomes.

Experience using use student performance data to guide instruction and/or school improvement efforts.

Experience working with a multidisciplinary service team.

Military Experience
