Schedule : Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2:30 – 6 p.m./ Wednesday: 12:30 – 6 p.m.

Program:

SBCS Before and After School Programs work with local schools to provide safe environments for students to engage in extended learning and recreational activities provided for by the ASES and ASSETS grants. BASP programs include homework support, organized sports, arts activities and a multitude of academic activities for youth in an environment parents can rely on to be safe daily until 6 p.m. These programs are housed in both traditional public and charter schools from 1st- 12th grades.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Under the supervision of SBCS BASP Program Supervisor and Site Supervisor, the School Program Youth Leader TK-8 is responsible for the supervision, development and implementation of academic, enrichment, and social-emotional well-being for groups of 10-20 children in grades TK-8 participating in the after-school program. Youth Leader will also assist students in improving academic skills and reaching performance goals in core academic subjects. The School Program Youth Leader TK-8 is responsible for working in collaboration with the school site personnel to meet the SBCS and applicable grant afterschool program goals and objectives. Services will be in keeping with agency goals, objectives, mission and style and provided within a team framework.

DUTIES :

  • Participates in the planning, implementation of the program in accordance with the goals and policies of SBCS, State of California Department of Education and TK-8 Before and After School Program that will ensure the success of Charter or elementary Schools
  • Participate in the preparation of age-appropriate activities, classroom or small group projects and special activities or events that align with the STEAM model of providing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics curriculum.
  • Organize age-appropriate materials and supplies to facilitate use by students, including cleaning up work areas following activities and group rotations.
  • Participate in the preparation of daily schedule/curriculum, which may include academic enrichment, snack distribution, recreation and/or leadership development as needed.
  • Establish cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults, ensuring to treat everyone in program with dignity and respect.
  • Assist and guide students by maintaining a professional demeanor and appropriate role modeling, emotional support, patience, a friendly and engaging attitude, and ensuring emergency procedures and safety are ensured at all times.
  • Assist in maintaining order among students in the program. Supervise student behavior in the classroom, school grounds and gathering areas, field trips, and special events.
  • Observe, monitor, and control the behavior of students by reactively using appropriate behavior corrective strategies in accordance with their grade level. Offer positive feedback and alternatives.
  • Report student academic, behavior progress and performance to Site Supervisor, and confer as needed regarding student needs.
  • Operate audiovisual equipment, computers, and other equipment that serves to assist and enhance program activities.
  • Assist with sign-in and sign-out of students, and ensure student is safely reunited with authorized guardian during student pick-up.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of accurate program records including participant registration and daily attendance in order to achieve and verify program goals are met.
  • Recruit and promote the program to school youth and parents.
  • Develop positive relationships and collaboration with school personnel.
  • Set up/take down classrooms for regular After School Program activities.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings.
  • As other duties assigned.

Requirements

  • Must meet and provide documentation of the minimum qualifications for Classroom Assistant, if candidate does not have 48 college credits.
  • AA or BA is highly desirable, passing score on district’s Instructional Assistant Exam (IA) acceptable.
  • Minimum of one year working with youth and/or children is highly desirable.
  • Must be highly dependable.
  • Must have a warm and friendly personality and the sensitivity to meet the needs of a diverse population.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act in an emergency situation.
  • Must have the ability to lead sports, games and curriculum activities, and monitor behavior.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural sensitivity, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients.
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability to the program.

Conditions of Employment

Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act in an emergency situation.
  • Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift.
  • Moves throughout the building.
  • Moves, raises, or lowers (includes upward pulling) an object or equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Transports an object, from 20 to 50 lbs. across the facility, for various needs.
  • Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force.
  • Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking)
  • Ascending or descending stairs and ladders when applicable. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when ascending, descending, traversing.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
