About the team

We are seeking a Senior Director, Fraud Prevention to lead the teams and technology responsible for keeping bad actors off Turo. This is a key role with broad scope. You will own the strategy and execution for user verification, identity fraud prevention, and pre trip fraud investigations. You will be the primary architect of the systems, tools, and operational playbooks that determine who gets access to Turo and who does not.

This role reports to the Chief Risk Officer and partners closely with Product, Engineering, Data Science, Legal, and Claims.

What you will do

Verification & Identity Fraud Strategy

Own the end to end strategy for user verification, including identity document verification, liveness detection, synthetic identity detection, and ongoing account monitoring.

Lead the evaluation, procurement, and optimization of third party verification and fraud tooling such as Socure, Ekata, Persona, or equivalent.

Develop and continuously improve decisioning frameworks that balance fraud prevention with conversion and user experience.

Stay ahead of evolving fraud vectors, including account takeover, document fraud, synthetic identities, and first party misrepresentation, and proactively build countermeasures.

Pre Trip Fraud Investigations

Lead the team responsible for pre trip fraud review, including identifying high risk bookings, escalating for manual review, and making go or no go decisions before a trip begins.

Define investigation workflows, risk scoring criteria, and escalation protocols that enable fast, accurate decisions at scale.

Build feedback loops between investigation findings and automated detection models to continuously improve signal quality.

Team & Operational Leadership

Build, develop, and hold accountable a multi tiered team of senior managers and individual contributors across verification operations and fraud investigations.

Oversee a mix of in house and vendor supported operations, including associated P&L and vendor performance.

Implement QA frameworks, coaching protocols, and productivity standards that ensure consistency and quality across all functions.

Cross Functional Collaboration & Platform Development

Partner with Product and Engineering to build and improve platform controls, automated fraud tooling, and risk based decisioning with a focus on reducing false positives.

Align with Legal, Finance, and International Trust & Safety teams on enforcement protocols, compliance requirements, and global policy.

Translate operational insights into product requirements and engineering priorities and serve as the fraud and verification domain expert for roadmap planning.

Represent Turo with industry associations, government agencies, law enforcement, and technology peers to stay current on emerging fraud patterns.

Executive Communication

Synthesize complex risk signals and operational metrics into clear narratives and strategic recommendations for senior leadership.

Define and own the KPIs that measure the health of verification, fraud prevention, and investigation functions.

Your profile

12 to 15+ years of experience in fraud prevention, identity risk, Trust & Safety, or related fields, ideally with meaningful experience at a high growth two sided marketplace or consumer technology platform.

10+ years of people management experience, including experience managing managers and overseeing both in house teams and third party vendor environments.

Deep expertise in identity verification, account fraud, document fraud, synthetic identity, account takeover, and pre transaction risk decisioning.

Strong knowledge of fraud tooling vendors and the trade offs between building internal solutions and purchasing third party technology.

Ability to work hands on with data, including proficiency with SQL, Excel, Google Sheets, or data visualization tools.

Experience partnering with Data Science and Engineering teams to develop and refine fraud detection models.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence executive stakeholders, present to board members, and guide cross functional partners with clarity and confidence.

Strong strategic leadership skills with the ability to translate fraud trends, operational insights, and data into scalable prevention strategies.

Demonstrates Turo’s operating principles through work product and day to day team interactions.

Bonus if you have

Advanced degree such as an MBA, JD, or MS.

Professional certification such as Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or Certified Protection Professional (CPP).

We’ve learned that there are scammers targeting job candidates by impersonating Turo and its employees. We ask candidates to be careful of fraudulent job postings or suspicious recruiting activity during their job search, especially if they’re contacted through unofficial channels (such as Instagram, Telegram, MS Teams, etc.). In general, Turo interacts with candidates through our Careers page and via turo.com email addresses, and we don’t ask candidates for sensitive financial or personal info or request money as part of the hiring process (so an application fee or equipment costs). If candidates are not sure whether they’re dealing with an impersonator, they can contact Turo’s Recruiting Team at recruit@turo.com . Candidates can also report suspicious activity to the FTC or other appropriate authorities.
