  • The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (“SR&ED”) Senior Manager (“Senior Manager”) is responsible for assisting clients in identifying and claiming SR&ED tax credits and then assisting the SR&ED Director in defending those credits when necessary in the context of a review by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The work is project-based and sometimes requires the team to spend time onsite at client facilities, working with engineers, scientists and technical personnel. This role includes performing and supervising tasks such as researching tax law, documenting expense treatment, and completing detailed models and calculations.
  • Duties and Responsibilities:

People:

  • Provides leadership, guidance, coaching and mentoring to a team of Managers and Consultants.
  • Along with principal and practice leader performs strategic planning, operational oversight, staff administration, and performance evaluation.

Client:

  • Interviews clients, uncovering all SR&ED eligible projects and all information required to prepare the T661 filing.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of the technical narratives for SR&ED tax credit claims of clients. This will also include the identification of specific employees, subcontractors and material expended in connection with the eligible activities identified, and determining the amount of effort relating thereto.
  • Advises and supports clients before and during any CRA technical review for SR&ED tax credit claims, and responds to correspondence that is initiated by CRA arguing technology aspects of the submitted SR&ED claim, if any.
  • Gathers samples of client supporting documents as claim(s) are prepared.
  • Collaborates with the firm’s key technical advisors on an ongoing development of the firm’s tools for preparing SR&ED claims.
  • Tracks time by client and activity codes and provides analysis to Principals on engagement level economics.

Value:

  • Creates forecasts for future claims and allocates work to team members accordingly.
  • Supports the team in the research of SR&ED tax court cases for client eligibility, developing training sessions based on this research.
  • Assists the Principal and Client Services team in preparing client presentations for proposals, planning strategies, and ideas.
  • Leverages experience and knowledge to maintain and/or attract new clients in various fields.
  • Makes presentations on SR&ED at Ryan’s formal training with clients, internal meetings and industry events.
  • Meets and develops relationships with CRA auditors on an on-going basis.
  • Contributes to keeping the firm’s SR&ED tax law knowledge base current.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Master's or PhD degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical or related disciplines) or Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related disciplines), related industry experience, and a minimum six years of SR&ED tax credit experience required. Must have excellent organization and time management skills, strong communication skills, and willingness to learn and be a team player.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in Microsoft® Excel and have a working knowledge of Microsoft® Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet navigation and research.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid driver’s license required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may require supervisory responsibilities, including training peers and checking work for accuracy and completeness.
