Role Overview
The Senior Director, Industry Relations is responsible for leading a team of senior account leaders who serve as strategic partners to biopharmaceutical manufacturers across oncology, rare disease, and specialty therapies. This role owns executive-level relationships with a portfolio of the organization's strategic manufacturer partners and is accountable for client satisfaction, program growth, launch excellence, retention, and long-term strategic alignment.
The Senior Director acts as a trusted advisor to senior leaders within biopharma organizations, providing consultation across commercialization strategy, market access, patient support programs, specialty pharmacy operations, launch planning, network strategy, analytics, and innovation. This leader serves as the executive escalation point for key client relationships and is expected to proactively identify opportunities, risks, and market shifts that impact client success.
Success in this role requires exceptional leadership capability, executive presence, business acumen, and a deep understanding of oncology and rare disease commercialization. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing high-performing teams, influencing senior stakeholders, leading organizational change, and driving measurable business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Client Leadership & Portfolio Manageme nt
- Serve as executive sponsor for a portfolio of strategic oncology, rare disease, and specialty pharmaceutical manufacturer partnerships.
- Establish and maintain trusted relationships with senior executives, brand teams, market access leaders, commercial leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Lead strategic account planning processes focused on program growth, performance optimization, patient outcomes, and long-term client retention.
- Oversee executive business reviews, annual strategic planning sessions, launch governance meetings, and performance discussions.
- Maintain accountability for client satisfaction, retention, and expansion opportunities across the assigned portfolio.
Leadership & Team Development
- Directly lead and develop a team of strategic account leaders responsible for manufacturer account management and strategic engagement.
- Establish performance expectations, coaching plans, development opportunities, and succession planning initiatives.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure leaders effectively execute relationship management strategies while developing the next generation of commercial and client leadership talent.
- Support cross-functional alignment across operations, implementation, provider engagement, quality, analytics, patient services, technology, and business development teams.
Commercialization Strategy & Launch Excellence
- Provide executive-level consultation regarding specialty pharmacy strategy, commercialization planning, patient support services, network design, market access, and launch execution.
- Partner with manufacturers to develop successful strategies for product launches, new indications, line extensions, and lifecycle management initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to leverage organizational capabilities and broader enterprise resources to drive market uptake, patient access, and provider satisfaction.
- Participate in launch governance and executive planning meetings with biopharma partners.
Innovation & Thought Leadership
- Serve as an industry expert and thought leader regarding specialty pharmacy, oncology, rare disease, payer dynamics, reimbursement trends, patient support innovation, and evolving market conditions.
- Identify emerging trends and opportunities that can create competitive differentiation and improved patient outcomes.
- Influence organizational strategy by translating market intelligence into actionable recommendations.
- Represent the organization at industry conferences, advisory boards, client meetings, and executive forums.
Risk Management & Executive Escalation
- Anticipate and proactively mitigate risks that could impact client satisfaction, patient experience, operational performance, or business growth.
- Lead executive-level issue resolution efforts for high-priority client concerns.
- Develop mitigation strategies and action plans in response to market changes, competitive pressures, performance challenges, or regulatory developments.
- Ensure transparent and effective communication with both internal leadership and external stakeholders.
Minimum Requirement
Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 13+ years of professional experience and 6+ years of diversified leadership, planning, communication, organization, and people motivation skills (or equivalent experience).
Education
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (MBA, MS, PharmD, or equivalent) preferred.
Critical Skills
- Minimum 12 years of healthcare, specialty pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturer, market access, or related industry experience.
- Minimum 6 years of progressive leadership experience managing managers, directors, or senior-level individual contributors.
- Demonstrated experience supporting oncology, rare disease, specialty therapeutics, or complex pharmaceutical commercialization programs.
- Proven success managing strategic biopharma partnerships and executive-level relationships.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting product launches, limited distribution networks, patient support programs, HUB services, specialty pharmacy, or commercialization strategy.
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale cross-functional initiatives and organizational transformation efforts.
- Experience presenting to executive leadership teams and C-suite stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of payer, provider, manufacturer, and specialty pharmacy ecosystems.
