As a Supervisory Asylum Officer (Section Chief), you will supervise individuals who review determinations on complex applications for asylum, credible fear, reasonable fear, and related applications.

Duties

  • Supervise individuals who review determinations on applications for asylum, credible and reasonable fear screenings, NACARA, termination of asylum, motions to reopen and reconsider, and related applications.
  • Ensure office resources are effectively used to timely process asylum, credible fear, reasonable fear, and related applications.
  • Provide technical and administrative direction to Asylum Division staff whose work involves the adjudication of asylum, credible fear, reasonable fear, and related applications.
  • Conduct reviews aimed at ensuring that applications for asylum benefits and other services are being granted appropriately, and that an appropriate level of quality in interviewing, case write-ups, and out-processing is achieved and maintained.
  • Formulate short- and long-term strategies for the office consistent with Asylum Division goals to help the organization accomplish its mission and objectives, and prepare plans and timetables for the implementation of these strategies.
  • Prepare plans, reports, and analyses of the immigration benefits operation, to include reviewing individual and program performance, and taking action to ensure compliance with established requirements, goals, standards, and objectives.

Qualifications

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 10/01/2026. Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service. The Time-in-Grade requirement must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 10/01/2026. GS-14: You qualify at the GS-14 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the majority of the following duties: Providing oversight of work performed by subordinates and assigned staff; Developing asylum and/or immigration program standards, policies and procedures; Coordinating the long-range planning of new asylum and/or immigration benefits programs; Assessing the productivity, effectiveness and efficiency of asylum and/or immigration program operations. Education

EDUCATIONAL SUBSTITUTION: There is no educational substitution at this grade level. Training: If you have not already done so, you will be required to attend any training that relates to this position as required by the agency. This training may last multiple weeks and may be held in-person or virtually. The training must be completed successfully according to the standards of the agency. Failure to do so will be grounds for mandatory removal from the position. Such failure will result in either reassignment to a different position, demotion, or separation by appropriate procedures. Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP): Per 5 CFR 576.202, An employee who receives a Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP) and later accepts employment for compensation with the Government of the United States within 5 years of the date of the separation on which the VSIP is based, including work under a personal services contract or other direct contract, must repay the entire amount of the VSIP to the agency that paid it (proof of payment is required) before the individual's first day of reemployment.
