About This Position

Job Description:

Intern - Graduate

Purpose:

Under general supervision, this position assists in general administrative or research functions to develop a working knowledge of a targeted area in municipal government related to benchmarked professional positions, performing advanced internship duties.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Observes and assists professionals in the assigned department to learn about areas of career interest.
  • Conducts research, collects and organizes data, performs analyses, and prepares reports to supplement knowledge gained through academic courses.
  • Proposes solutions to existing problems and discusses recommendations with administrative personnel to acquire skills in problem solving.
  • Is responsible for special projects as assigned.
  • Leads, as necessary, in the coordination, administration, or monitoring of specific programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods.
  • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to create clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

Enrolled in an accredited college or university graduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of archival standards, issues, practices, and trends.
  • Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
  • Skill in using standards for archival description.
  • Experience providing quality customer service in a public-facing environment.
  • Ability to carry out detailed and repetitive tasks while remaining focused and meeting established timelines.
  • Ability to manage and switch work tasks to meet customer and department needs.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and customers of all ages.
  • Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university.
  • Current enrollment in a graduate degree program in Library/Information Science, with a concentration in Archival Enterprise, History, or Public History.

Notes to Candidate:

The Intern Graduate position supports the Reference and Access Team with Reading Room operations, including paging materials, reshelving items, assisting patrons, supporting reference desk staff, and providing general team assistance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting archivists with maintaining archival collections, books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and providing customer service and research support.
  • Sorting manuscripts, books, publications, and other materials according to established procedures and returning them to shelves, files, or designated areas.
  • Helping the public use the collections by explaining available resources and how to locate information. Communicating and enforcing library policies and procedures for both staff and patrons.
  • Responding to routine inquiries and directing patrons to archivists when professional assistance is needed.
  • Locating archival and library materials for patrons, including manuscripts, archival records, architectural documents, photographs, maps, audiovisual items, books, and periodicals.
  • Performing clerical tasks such as answering phones, sorting mail, filing, typing, photocopying, and preparing outgoing materials.

Salary Range:

$22.15 per hour

Hours and Schedule :

20 hours weekly (Afternoons), Wednesday - Saturday.

Additional Information:

All new employees are required to attend City of Austin and Austin Public Library training as scheduled and should arrange their outside schedules to accommodate such training.

Verification of the minimum qualifications (Enrolled in an accredited college or university graduate degree program, with some advanced coursework related to the internship program) will be required. You must provide proof of education from an accredited organization/institute.

Veteran:

Veteran candidates will be required to provide a copy of their DD-214

Language:

Must have the ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English.
