Job Title:

Visiting Assistant Professor

Department:

Engineering | Knowlton School of Architecture Administration

Howard E. Lefevre '29

Emerging Practitioner Fellowship

Knowlton School of Architecture

Position Overview

The Architecture Section of the Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University seeks forward-looking candidates for the Howard E. LeFevre ’29 Fellowship. The LeFevre Fellowship is a two-year appointment for an emerging architect to develop an ambitious research project addressing contemporary questions in architecture.

While at the Knowlton School, the fellow will have the opportunity to pursue focused research alongside related teaching and public programming. Intended to support work that expands the boundaries of the discipline, the fellowship provides access to research support, fabrication and exhibition facilities, focused teaching assignments, and an intellectually engaged community of colleagues committed to experimentation.

Past LeFevre Fellows have pursued widely varied forms of architectural research, including work in emerging media and technologies, experimental material assemblies, architectural history and theory, and climate-responsive design. Now entering its 26th cycle, previous fellows include Michael Silver, Joachim Huber, Janette Kim, Lola Sheppard, Mason White, Stephen Roe, Chiafang Wu, Andrew Kudless, William O'Brien Jr., Jimenez Lai, Nick Gelpi, Brian Holland, Michael Piper, Brandon Clifford, Justin Diles, Curtis Roth, David Eskenazi, Carrie Mcknelly, Galo Canizares, Sarah Hirschmann, Emily Mohr, Galen Pardee, Zelig Fok, Georgina Baronian, Samiha Meem, and Pablo Castillo-Luna.

Situated within a major research university with extensive fabrication, research, and exhibition facilities, the Knowlton School is a site for critical inquiry and experimental architectural practice. The school combines a strong design culture with work in technology, fabrication, representation, history and theory, and contemporary social and environmental questions. The school and university are located in Columbus, a growing metropolitan area of more than two million people.

The successful applicant will receive two consecutive nine-month appointments over two academic years. During this period, the fellow is expected to develop a substantial body of research that contributes to the intellectual and design culture of the Knowlton School and to the broader discipline of architecture.

The fellowship is structured to provide both time and resources for this work. Fellows teach studios and seminars related to their research, develop a public exhibition, deliver a public lecture, and may organize related events such as symposia, workshops, or other forms of public programming. Support includes salary for the teaching appointment, a paid research assistant, funding for research and project materials, and a budget for events and programming.

Immigration/visa sponsorship may be available in very limited situations, but all decisions concerning immigration/visa sponsorship will depend on an evaluation of complexity and risk. We will not engage in immigration sponsorship for this position for individuals subject to the J-1 two-year home residency requirement or who will require consular processing for a visa to come to the United States to begin work at the university.

Performance Objectives

  • Develop and advance an ambitious, original body of architectural research that contributes to contemporary discourse and the intellectual culture of the Knowlton School.
  • Develop and teach innovative studios and/or seminars that translate your research into rigorous, experimental forms of architectural education.
  • Contribute to the intellectual life of the Knowlton School through exhibitions, lectures, workshops, symposia, or other forms of public programming related to your research.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A terminal degree in architecture or a closely allied discipline.
  • Evidence of the ability to initiate and develop an original research, design, or creative project.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and engaged approaches to architectural education. Prior teaching experience is not required.
