Summary
Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, New York Field Office, Communications Management Office, located in New York, NY. Additional selections may be made for other organizational divisions and/or units within the duty location(s) listed above.
Duties
Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise in visual design and presentation. This position starts at a salary of $105,481.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $137,128.00 (GS-12, Step 10). In this Visual Information Specialist position, you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals creating websites and promotional material for recruiting purposes. Typical work assignments include: Advising and consulting with the port managers, and field office staff on developing and implementing integrated communications/media policies and programs Conceptualizing, designing, and overseeing the production of CBP informational materials for the Web and print using DHS/CBP creative guidelines Developing new methods of conveying messages regarding CBP initiatives, policies, and procedures by employing state-of-the-art visual information technologies Performing research to locate images suitable for inclusion in various visual products GS Salary: Visit this link to view the locality pay tables by geographic area. Qualifications
Individual Occupational Requirements: Applicants who meet the Individual Occupational Requirements described below are fully qualified for the specified entry grade and must also meet the specialized experience and/or education requirements. Specialized Experience: Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position. This includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other artwork, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means. In addition to meeting the above Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR), applicants must also meet the following specialized experience of the position. Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Providing visual information services and content in support of strategic communication efforts. Using an assortment of technologies to encourage support agency programs and policies. Assisting in designing and producing internal and external information material for SharePoint. Assisting in developing and shaping content for dissemination/publication via multiple communication channels including but not limited to SharePoint, Internet posting, social media. Collaborating with customers and subject-matter specialists on proposals for video and still productions. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 10/08/2026. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions: Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period. Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) Eligibles: If you have never worked for the federal government, you are not CTAP/ICTAP eligible.
