Summary

As an Actuary with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Healthcare and Insurance, Office of the Actuaries, you will perform actuarial analysis, research, and data analysis supporting retirement, health, life insurance, and/or other benefit programs; assist with actuarial valuations and premium activities; and document analytical processes and results.

Duties

Assist with actuarial valuations of retirement, health, life insurance, and/or other benefit programs using actuarial principles and methods. Gather, compile, and analyze program experience, demographic, and other data used in actuarial analyses. Prepare data and calculations used to determine actuarial liabilities for Federal employee and annuitant benefit programs. Conduct actuarial research and analysis used to support recommendations concerning benefit programs and policies. Analyze factors underlying actuarial issues and apply established analytical methods to assigned problems. Assist higher-graded actuaries with activities related to negotiating premiums with participating benefit program carriers. Prepare documentation summarizing the methods, computations, processes, and results of actuarial assignments.

Qualifications

Due to the high number of applications we anticipate for the vacancy, this announcement will close the day we receive 100 applications or after 5 days - whichever comes first. Regardless of the number of applications it will be open for a minimum of two days. To qualify for the grade GS-7, you must meet one of the following: A. Eligibility under the superior academic achievement provision and a bachelor's degree that included courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science totaling at least 24 semester hours. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites. OR B. One year of graduate education in the subject areas of actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science; and a course of educational study as described in paragraph (A) above. OR C. One year of actuarial experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level AND completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours of courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science at a four year college or university equivalent to a course of study described in paragraph (A). This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites. OR D. Successful completion of appropriate examinations offered by the Society of Actuaries(SOA), the Casualty Actuarial Society(CAS), or the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries(JBEA), as evidenced by an official SOA or CAS transcript and completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours of courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science at a four year college or university equivalent to a course of study described in paragraph (A). This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites. To meet the Recent Graduate Program Eligibility requirements, you must have obtained a qualifying Associates, Bachelor's, Master's, Professional, Doctorate, Vocational or Technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution, within the previous 2 years. Applicants who will meet all degree or certificate requirements for graduation within 30 days of the announcement's closing date are eligible to apply. All Education must be accredited by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement.) Therefore, applicants must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. ATTENTION VETERANS: A veteran, as defined in 5 U.S.C. 2108, who due to military service obligation, was precluded from applying to the Recent Graduates Program during any portion of the 2-year eligibility period shall have a full 2-year period of eligibility upon his or her release or discharge from active duty. In no event, however, may the individual's eligibility period extend beyond 6 years from the date on which the individual completed the requirements of an academic course of study. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
