Job Summary:

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Mississippi invites applications for an American Sign Language/Interpreting Instructor. This is a nine-month, non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Instructor. Applicants must hold a master's degree, or its equivalent, in American Sign Language instruction, interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate native or near-native proficiency in American Sign Language. Previous teaching experience, particularly at the postsecondary level, professional interpreting experience, and state-level or national interpreter certification are preferred.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will teach courses in the American Sign Language Interpreting Minor program on the Oxford, Mississippi campus. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of Deaf culture and the cultural and linguistic foundations of American Sign Language, as well as an understanding of professional and ethical practices relevant to ASL instruction and interpreting. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate American Sign Language courses, prepare students to communicate effectively and appropriately with ASL users, and to work professionally with individuals and communities they may encounter in interpreting settings. Additional responsibilities may include contributing to curriculum development and program activities, advising and mentoring students, participating in departmental and university service, and maintaining current knowledge of professional standards and practices in American Sign Language instruction and interpreting.

Job Responsibilities:

Persons with the rank of instructor shall be hired for teaching duties but shall not be tenure track. The contracts will be renewable at the discretion of the University. The individual chosen will perform the function of teaching with renewable contracts. Not eligible for tenure.
