What’s the role

Shell is seeking an Asset Engineer to join its team in Monaca, Pennsylvania.

The Asset Engineer provides front-line technical and equipment support for the Production Unit (PU), helping ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the asset. The role is embedded within the PU technical team, which translates operational priorities into structured technical work and manages troubleshooting, threat resolution, and operational improvement activities focused on the unit’s most critical reliability, safety, and optimization needs.

This role will bring a strong field presence and broad equipment perspective, working closely with Operations and other technical resources to identify emerging equipment issues, understand their operational impact, support near-term resolution, and escalate issues requiring deeper technical expertise.

This role will serve as an embedded technical resource in the production team, with a primary focus on the physical condition, reliability, and near-term technical needs of the equipment within the area.

The future operating model positions the Hard Side Asset Engineer as the PU resource responsible for managing physical equipment engineering solutions. More broadly, the frontline technical team monitors equipment performance, analyzes technical issues, and supports troubleshooting and reliability improvement.

You will work closely with Operations to maintain awareness of equipment condition and emerging threats, provide timely technical input, and help translate equipment concerns into clear actions. You will resolve issues within the capability and time horizon of the PU while engaging Site Technical when problems require advanced troubleshooting, engineered solutions, specialized discipline support, or longer-term intervention. The operating model specifically differentiates these responsibilities, with Production focused on near-term operations and Site Technical addressing deeper technical issues and systemic reliability problems.

The role requires an engineer who is comfortable operating in the field, working across engineering disciplines, making sound risk-based technical judgments, and connecting equipment condition to safe and reliable operation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide day-to-day equipment engineering support to the Production Unit, maintaining close engagement with Operations and the frontline technical team
  • Monitor equipment condition and performance, identify developing reliability or integrity concerns, and support troubleshooting of near-term equipment issues
  • Maintain a regular field presence to understand equipment condition, changing operating conditions, and potential safety or environmental concerns
  • Support development of practical mitigation plans for on-stream equipment issues, engaging the appropriate discipline engineers when specialized engineering is required
  • Monitor upcoming inspection and equipment integrity requirements and identify obstacles that could affect near-term compliance or execution
  • Provide operating and equipment context to Site Technical when issues exceed PU capability and require advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis, or an engineered solution. The operating model establishes Site Technical as the partner for recurring equipment issues and systemic failure resolution
  • Support Management of Change activities by providing the unit requirements, operating context, and equipment knowledge needed to define safe and effective changes. In the future-state model, Production defines the need and operating constraints while Site Technical or Projects determines the engineering solution and governance

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline relevant to industrial asset or equipment support
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Strong understanding of equipment reliability, mechanical integrity, troubleshooting, and safe operation in a manufacturing or process environment
  • Ability to recognize developing equipment problems, assess technical risk, and translate observations and data into practical recommendations
  • Strong field orientation and willingness to spend time where the equipment and work are located
  • Ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines rather than approaching every issue through a single-discipline lens. This aligns with the future-state expectation that Production develops broader cross-discipline troubleshooting capability and escalates when deeper specialization is required
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound technical judgments using incomplete or evolving information
  • Working knowledge of equipment integrity, reliability, Management of Change, technical assurance, and risk-management principles
  • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly to Operations, Maintenance, engineering specialists, and leadership
  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to bring multiple disciplines together around safe, practical solutions
  • Ability to balance immediate operational needs with equipment integrity and reliability considerations
  • A proactive mindset, curiosity about how equipment performs and fails, and a commitment to identifying issues before they become operational events
