Our FCC Environmental - Pinellas County Waste to Energy facility (WTE) is currently seeking an Assistant Control Room Operator for monitoring and operations of WTE Power Plant, Turbine Generator and Air Pollution Control (APC) systems.

As an Assistant Control Room Operator (ACRO) you will be responsible for proper, safe, compliant and efficient operations of the WTE boiler combustion and steam generation and distribution equipment and systems in the field. In addition this employee conducts extensive operating logs, process adjustments and rounds on air pollution control (APC) systems and components, turbine generator and associated equipment, boiler feed pumps, condensate pumps, make-up pumps, dump condenser and associated equipment, turbine lube and control oil systems, electrical distribution systems, waste water system, demineralized water system, process water system and cooling towers to assure that the facility meets it's operational, environmental, and safety commitments while operating in a safe and environmentally efficient manner.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs inspections, makes effective rounds and takes appropriate action to maintain Boiler, Combustion system, Turbine Generator and APC systems operating within prescribed limits.
  • Assists the Plant Operator in the daily operation and maintenance of the plant in the field. Investigate changes in instrument readings and equipment operation. Notifies Plant Operator and/or Shift Supervisor of operational inconsistencies or other concerns.
  • Makes required turbine/generator APC and other critical inspections regularly and as described in facility policy and procedures. Recognizes and mitigates operating difficulties. Adapts to changing plant conditions regarding maximizing plant safety, compliance and efficiency and minimizing down time.
  • Assisting as needed in the daily operation of the Control Room. Duties may include but not limited to operations of the Distributed Control System (DCS) for plant system control and adjustment, operations of Turbine Generator through the installed Human Machine Interface (HMI), preparing of lockout tag-out permits, confined space permits, hot-work permits, etc.
  • Performs daily routine inspections and services of assigned equipment and troubleshooting on equipment and reports all malfunctioning equipment through direct report, log reporting and the issuance of work orders.
  • Conducts comprehensive equipment “rounds” and system operations inspections per established frequency and per established procedure and standards. Conducts starting, stopping and adjustment of systems and components as notified by control room operator and/or shift supervisor.
  • Performs lockout and tag-out of equipment in support of maintenance activities.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior field operators to include Crane, Auxiliary, and Utility Operators to maintain safe and efficient operations.
  • Effectively monitor and control assigned operations systems and have strong working knowledge of boiler, turbine, air pollution control and auxiliary equipment operations
  • Manage critical events and plant upset conditions and prioritize tasks for completion at times during emergency, providing clear directions in operational, safety and environmental tasks
  • Respond to operational alarms, taking immediate corrective action through direct action or through dispatch of appropriate field operator.
  • Demonstrate solid understanding of operational best practices, including the ability to problem solve and make sound decisions.
  • Assists the Plant Operator in the daily operation and maintenance of the plant in the field. Investigate changes in instrument readings and equipment operation. Notifies Plant Operator and/or Shift Supervisor of operational inconsistencies or other concerns.
  • Makes required turbine/generator APC and other critical inspections regularly and as described in preexisting procedures. Recognizes and mitigates operating difficulties. Adapts to changing plant conditions regarding maximizing plant safety and efficiency and minimizing down time.
  • Documents on log; comments that facilitate problem tracking; work that needs to be performed; and other plant activities that communicate status of plant. Maintains logs and other written documentation on schedule and with clear, accurate and legible writing.
  • Operates all aspects of demineralization system, including making required adjustments to system safely and accurately. Performs water testing and treatment using knowledge of boiler water chemistry, maintains set parameters and laboratory procedures. Completes accurate and timely water tests; records data and performs chemical adjustments with assistance.
  • With guidance, operates all aspects of APC system safely and accurately. Adjusts APC system so that system performance is appropriate and reliable for safe, compliant and efficient operations. Works with maintenance to troubleshoot problems and assesses probable cause with assistance from Plant Operator and Shift Supervisor.
  • Completes emergent and assigned tasks as identified by shift supervisor and as established through operations routines.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean, neat, and orderly condition at all times.
  • Completes the Corporate and Plant Training Programs within the time frame prescribed.
  • Maintain positive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, clients, vendors, co-workers and management.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED (accredited)
  • ASME QRO provisional certification preferred. In absence of certification, candidate must be able to sit for the examination within 1 year of start date.
  • 3 years working in a power plant operation or related experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the operation of a steam generating power plant
  • Mechanical abilities sufficient to perform a wide range of minor equipment maintenance such valve maintenance, pressure part gaskets and fasteners, pump packing adjustments, removal of inspection and access covers and servicing of strainers/filters/hydraulics and lubricating oil purification.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts.
  • Must be able to work overtime.

Physical Demand

  • Handle tools, equipment, and fine motor skills.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, and climb
  • Ability to lift/carry 50lbs
  • Qualify to wear a full-face respirator
  • Consistently work in various weather conditions
  • Climb and walk on heights often greater than 4 feet.
  • Move about all areas of the plant, including catwalks, deck grating, and uneven surfaces.
  • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, corrected or otherwise.
  • Operate a 1.5 inch fire hose operating at 125 PSI line pressure to the extent required to extinguish fire.
  • Operate fire extinguishing equipment ranging from hand held extinguishers to 200 lbs. portable units.
  • Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 12” by 16” manways.

PPE Required

  • Negative pressure respirator.
  • Positive pressure respirator.
  • Chemical resistant suit.
  • Heat resistant outerwear.
  • Flame resistant outerwear.

Environmental Conditions

  • Potential exposure to ash, dust, and chemicals.
  • Work in close proximity to heavy industrial equipment.
  • Work in close proximity to high temperature, high pressure steam systems.
  • High temperature atmosphere and humid conditions. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
