Job Overview
The Assistant Director of Capital Projects, reporting to the Director of Capital Projects, supports the implementation of capital projects across campuses and university interests; and assists project delivery by supporting efficient and effective processes to align all internal and external participants in the program, including coordination of the project managers and support resources. They collaborate with senior academic and administrative leadership to support Georgetown’s mission, cultivate and sustain cooperative working relationships throughout the institution. In addition to general administrative and leadership responsibilities, this role will direct and oversee implementation of a large portfolio of small- to mid-sized capital renewal projects aimed at renovating and maintaining existing building infrastructure and reducing the University’s deferred maintenance. The Assistant Director supports the management of a technical unit delivering capital project services from initiation through turnover.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provides direction to project managers who lead teams of consultant architects and engineers, construction managers, contractors, O&M personnel and contracting specialists.
- Ensures all aspects of project management are effectively implemented and accomplished - such as project approvals from appropriate government agencies and community interest groups
- Adherence to established project budgets and schedules; schematic design reviews, onsite inspections to evaluate contractor performance, confirmations of satisfactory progression of work, and assurance that change order management validates scope of work, justification and pricing.
- Monitors work of the unit and takes appropriate steps to ensure that activities meet requirements.
- Works collegially across the university to ensure that design standards, project goals and the University mission are documented, reviewed and achieved.
- At the direction of the Director, the Assistant Director and technical staff manage 50-70 projects per year and average annual expenditures of +$50M. Projects will vary in complexity and scope across all university properties.
- Provide comprehensive support for the project turnover process including cross functional efforts with Facilities and related partners.
- Work with the University Archivist to ensure a seamless transition from construction completion to active operations, including the transfer of documentation, training coordination, and closeout approvals.
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Director of Capital Projects, the Assistant Director interacts with University faculty, students and staff, community interest groups, contractors, and subcontractors. For each project, they manage and work with a project team led by a project manager with 5 to 20 team members (stakeholders, design consultants, construction contractors, contracting specialists and O&M personnel and telecommunications personnel). As well, they interact with contractor personnel, including subcontractors, suppliers, manufacturers, transportation firms, and specialty consultants hired via prime contractors to support project outcomes. The Assistant Director also manages contracted project managers and provides leadership and direction to manage a large portfolio of capital work. This position also leads the implementation of Georgetown’s deferred maintenance program.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; Architecture or Landscape Architecture; Construction; Project Management; or Urban Planning.
- Five to seven years of progressive management of large planning, design, and construction projects; and / or five to seven years of progressive managerial experience in the planning, design, and construction fields.
- Must be computer literate in MS Office, the Google Workspace suite of projects, and fluent in project planning and scheduling software.
- Requires a high level of interpersonal skills for daily interaction with faculty and staff, clients, GU managers, team members, and public agency officials
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
- Requires the ability to prepare clear and concise reports, a variety of matrices, oral presentations and code analyses
- Licensed professional preferred.

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$80,429.00 - $157,238.93
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
