Assistant or Associate Professor of Real Estate – Development and Finance Focus

Overview

Candidates will have an extraordinary opportunity to join one of the largest and fastest-growing MRED programs in the United States, supported by a distinguished advisory board of 75 real estate industry leaders and located in Miami—an exciting, culturally vibrant city and one of the world’s most dynamic real estate markets.

The Master of Real Estate Development + Urbanism (MRED+U) program at the University of Miami School of Architecture invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position, from assistant to full professor, based at the Coral Gables campus. The appointment will begin in August 2027.

We seek candidates with expertise in real estate, real estate finance, real estate development, or closely related areas whose teaching, research, and professional practice will advance the interdisciplinary mission of MRED+U. We particularly value scholarship grounded in practice, engagement with developers and communities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and potential for academic or professional leadership. Candidates may demonstrate these strengths through different combinations of academic and professional accomplishments.

MRED+U welcomes candidates from academic and professional backgrounds with a strong connection to real estate. Rank and appointment type, including consideration for tenured or tenure-track appointments, will reflect the candidate’s qualifications and applicable University requirements.

Areas of Expertise

Candidates may specialize in one or more of the following areas:

Real estate, real estate finance and analytics; real estate development across all sectors and product types; real estate investment; urban economics and market analysis; architecture and urban design for real estate development; construction and project delivery; planning, land use, housing, and development policy; public-private partnerships; sustainable and resilient development; or other areas directly related to real estate.

Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of real estate finance and the ability to integrate appropriate financial concepts and analysis into courses they may teach in real estate development, real estate sectors and product types, case studies, and capstone workshops. Experience teaching dedicated real estate finance courses is highly valued but not required.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold at least a master’s degree at the time of application. Candidates whose highest degree is a bachelor’s degree are not eligible.

Applicants may qualify through either of the following pathways:

· An earned Ph.D. or other doctorate (such as a Doctor of Business Administration or Doctor of Design) in Real Estate, Finance, Economics, or a closely related discipline, with research, publication, and teaching accomplishments appropriate to career stage and a substantive focus on real estate. The doctoral degree must be completed before the start of the fall semester in August 2027.

· A master’s degree in Real Estate or a closely related field, combined with significant professional experience relevant to real estate development and urbanism, an exemplary record of professional accomplishment, and university teaching experience, preferably at the graduate level.

Related fields may include architecture, construction, finance, business, planning, or another discipline with a clear connection to real estate development. Applicants whose degree is not in real estate must demonstrate that connection through teaching, research, publications, and/or professional work.

Candidates may demonstrate interdisciplinary accomplishments and leadership through development projects, academic programs, curriculum development, or collaborations among industry, universities, public agencies, and communities. Particular emphasis will be placed on applying this experience to graduate teaching, student mentorship, and program leadership. Engagement with leading industry organizations, such as the Urban Land Institute, and experience working with senior industry executives and/or advisory boards are valued.

Rank and Scholarly Expectations

For tenured or tenure-track consideration, candidates must demonstrate a defined or emerging research agenda in real estate-related areas and scholarly publication or potential for high-quality publication appropriate to rank. For these appointments, assistant professor candidates must demonstrate potential for excellent teaching and high-quality research. Associate professor candidates must have a research and publication record commensurate with rank and demonstrated excellence in graduate teaching in real estate or related areas.

For candidates qualifying through the professional pathway, rank will reflect professional accomplishments, teaching effectiveness, interdisciplinary work, and leadership experience. Scholarship, applied research, and professional contributions will be evaluated according to the appointment.

To be eligible for tenure on appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Tenure must be approved before hire.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach and develop core and elective courses in the current and future MRED+U curriculum; advise and mentor students; collaborate across disciplines; contribute to development studios and the Capstone Workshop; engage industry partners; and participate in curriculum development and service. The faculty member will contribute to program leadership and support its continued growth and visibility. Research, publication, applied research, and professional engagement will reflect the nature of the appointment.

About the MRED+U Program

MRED+U blends the fundamentals of real estate development with livable community design. This interdisciplinary, 36-credit graduate program can be completed in 11 months or over additional semesters. Students bring varied academic and professional backgrounds from Florida, across the United States, and internationally.

The program serves as an interdisciplinary nexus within the University. Its flagship course enrolls 80–100 graduate students each fall from as many as 10 degree programs across five schools and colleges. The program maintains strong ties with the Accelerated MBA in Real Estate at the Miami Herbert Business School, the Real Property Development Program at the Law School, and the MS in Construction Management jointly offered by the College of Engineering and School of Architecture. Within the School of Architecture, MRED+U engages faculty and students through interdisciplinary courses, design and development studios, competitions, study-abroad programs, and a schoolwide Capstone Workshop.

Advisory board members support the program through student mentoring, internships and employment opportunities, guest lectures, site visits, and events. The annual, invitation-only Real Estate Impact Conference, organized with the Miami Herbert Business School, features distinguished speakers and connects students with more than 900 industry leaders.
