Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is a land grant university with a vision of building global expertise in research and education to support the nation’s drive to create a robust supply chain of critical minerals and materials (CMM). Nevada is taking on this challenge, striving to grow its CMM industry (mining the ore, materials processing, manufacturing products for the end user, and recycling of spent products for resource recovery). The region is experiencing substantial investments in the CMM industry, and UNR leads the Nevada Tech Hub, which is using $21 million from the US Economic Development Administration to further catalyze the lithium economy locally.

The School of Civil, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering plays a key role in Nevada’s CMM growth, and invites applications at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to undergraduate and graduate education in chemical engineering. The intended start date for the position is July 1, 2027.

Required Qualifications

• •Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field is required, and the candidate must hold at least one (1) degree in chemical engineering.
• •The candidate must possess expertise in critical minerals and materials, broadly defined.
• •Candidates are requested to describe their expertise in CMM in their cover letter.

Preferred Qualifications

• •Preference will be given to candidates whose work integrates innovative separation technologies, process intensification, circular economy approaches, or critical mineral and rare-earth element recovery to address pressing national and global supply chain challenges.
• •Applicants with experience applying machine learning tools in their research are especially encouraged.
• •Demonstrated record in teaching is desired.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees

The University is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee’s spouse or domestic partner. The School of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) is a research-intensive school with around 650 BS, MS, and Ph.D. students, 29 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 1 lecturer, 7 research faculty, and various technical and administrative staff. The school offers ABET-accredited B.S. degree programs in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering, as well as nationally-ranked graduate programs in these disciplines. In 2025, CCEE’s programs reported more than $9 million in annual research expenditures funded by external grants. The school fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment and maintains strong partnerships with public agencies, industry and local employers that enhance research opportunities and career pathways for students.
