POSITION SUMMARY

The Architecture Department seeks to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Architecture position. The successful candidate will teach 1-2 classical design studios every semester. Additional teaching responsibilities will range from technical studios and/or lecture courses that cover various subjects related to classical design principles, such as, the Orders, hand-drafting, perspective, and/or Beaux-Arts watercolor techniques and ink-rendering. The preferred candidate will be able to teach or co-teach on various topics related to the building arts. The typical responsibilities of this position will consist of teaching approximately 12-credit hours per semester. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by 11:59pm on December 01, 2026. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. The successful candidate will begin August 1, 2027.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a unique classical architecture program (offering a B.A. in Architecture) by teaching the art of architecture. From this perspective the successful candidate will help motivate students to understand, preserve, and carry forward classical and vernacular architecture traditions in the service of families and their communities, their institutions, their liturgies, their public processions, etc.

The Architecture Department seeks a candidate who understands, is enthusiastic about, and intends to make a significant contribution to the mission of Benedictine College. Benedictine College is an academic community sponsored by the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey. To that end, the successful candidate will strive as a member of the college community to support the teachings of Jesus Christ as handed on by the Church.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The responsibilities of the job include teaching undergraduate courses; advising students on curricular and career choices; assisting student organizations; participating in departmental and campus activities; and serving on college committees. Specific courses and levels will be assigned according to the successful candidate’s experience and expertise. An Assistant Professor of Architecture is expected to begin developing scholarly and professional maturity as evidenced variously by any of the following: publications, built works, presentations of scholarly material at regional and national conferences, and the development of course materials.

Education & Experience

The Architecture Department welcomes outstanding teacher-scholars and accomplished practicing architects committed to teaching classical architecture. Preference will be given to applicants with a Master of Architecture or an equivalent professional degree in architecture. Applicants with other educational backgrounds will also be considered on the strength of some combination of architectural practice, professional licensure, creative work, scholarship, and college-level teaching. Candidates should demonstrate a deep understanding of classical architecture and the capacity to contribute through teaching and scholarly or creative professional work.

6. Portfolio of Professional, Scholarly, and Teaching Work (maximum 12 pages), which may include:

  • Published articles or abstracts;
  • Artwork;
  • Built works;
  • Student work; and/or
  • Other relevant examples of academic instruction.

Preference should be given to samples of hand-drawn design work, including both personal work and student work where applicable.
