Job Description

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of The Texas A&M University System, welcomes applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering) to begin Fall 2027 .

TAMIU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with over 8,000 students, located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. The University advances knowledge through research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement, and public service, with an intentional focus on student success and research excellence. For more information, please visit https://www.tamiu.edu/.

This is a tenure-track, nine-month Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering position. A reduced teaching load supports research development. Primary duties will include establishing an independent, externally funded research program in structural engineering; contributing to the development of the School’s structural engineering laboratory; contributing to the BS in Civil Engineering with primary responsibility for teaching Structural Analysis, Reinforced Concrete & Steel, and related structural engineering coursework; and mentoring student research and senior design projects. Duties also include teaching other Civil Engineering and engineering courses as needed; supporting recruitment, preparation for future ABET accreditation, and service; collaborating with academia, industry, and government; and pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure when eligible. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

The School of Engineering offers ABET-accredited programs in Systems, Computer, and Petroleum Engineering. Its BS in Computer Science and MS in Systems Engineering launched in 2026, and its BS in Civil Engineering launches in 2027. This structural hire and another geotechnical hire will join an environmental engineering colleague hired last year. Together, they will lead the Civil Engineering program’s Fall 2027 launch, supported by strong regional demand for civil engineers. This position is part of a strategic faculty expansion in the School of Engineering to hire 10 permanent faculty members, eight tenure-track and two instructional, beginning Fall 2027.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date. Applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in structural engineering through research, scholarship, professional experience, or a combination thereof, and the ability to teach Structural Analysis, Reinforced Concrete & Steel, and related structural engineering coursework; develop associated laboratory activities; mentor student research; and establish an independent research program. Candidates must show strength in one or more areas: experimental tests of steel or reinforced concrete components and connections; performance under extreme loads; testing innovative or sustainable structural materials; structural health monitoring and field instrumentation; or repair and strengthening of existing structures. Experience or ability to design and conduct structural experiments, develop a structural lab, pursue external funding, and build industry and government partnerships is especially desirable. PE licensure or progress toward it (e.g., FE/EIT) is highly desirable.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the University.

Application Process

The completed employment application must include:

  • A letter of interest or cover letter that addresses the candidate’s qualifications for the position.
  • Current curriculum vitae.
  • Unofficial transcripts documenting the conferred degree or progress toward completion of the required doctorate.
  • Names and contact information of three current professional references.
  • Statement of research interests, experience, and future plans.
  • Statement of teaching experience and philosophy.

Applications must be submitted online at https://www.tamiu.edu/admins/ohr/employment/. Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.

INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT : During the application process, you have only one opportunity to enter the requested information, upload documents, and submit the application. You will not be able to make changes or add additional documents once you “Submit” the application materials. The software does not allow you to “Save” your application and return to complete the process at a later time. The page "My Experience" has an area provided under Resume/CV to drop or upload files.

Applications received by Texas A&M International University must have all job application data entered. Failure to provide all job application data could result in an invalid submission and a rejected application. “See resume” is not an acceptable entry in the job application.
