About This Opportunity

We are seeking an Associate Designer to provide entry-level design support for commercial interiors and contract furniture applications. This role supports assigned project work through space planning, furniture layouts, specifications, presentation materials, and design documentation while developing technical proficiency, product knowledge, and understanding of MillerKnoll standards.

The Associate Designer works under close to moderate guidance, contributes to assigned project deliverables, collaborates with cross-functional partners, and builds the technical accuracy, product knowledge, application judgment, and communication skills needed to progress toward more independent application design responsibilities. This is an early-career professional role intended for someone with strong design fundamentals, curiosity about workplace strategy, and a desire to grow within the contract furniture industry.

General Purpose

The Associate Designer provides foundational design support for commercial interior and furniture application projects. This position assists with the development of layouts, specifications, drawings, renderings, presentation materials, and project documentation while applying established MillerKnoll standards and tools under guidance from more experienced designers. The role contributes to assigned project work, maintains accurate documentation, communicates progress and risks, and supports internal partners in delivering high-quality design solutions.

Essential Functions

  • Support assigned commercial furniture design tasks and workstreams through space planning, furniture applications, specifications, drawings, renderings, and design documentation.
  • Prepare layouts, presentation materials, supporting visuals, and project documentation under guidance from more experienced designers.
  • Assist with product research, finish selections, application options, typical development, and design problem-solving using established MillerKnoll standards and tools, with direction and review from more experienced designers.
  • Review assigned work for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project direction before submitting for review.
  • Maintain accurate project files, documentation, and communication related to assigned tasks.
  • Collaborate with sales, design, project management, visualization, product, and other internal partners to support project goals, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Participate in internal project meetings and, as appropriate, client or dealer-facing discussions to provide support materials and learn project context.
  • Develop knowledge of MillerKnoll products, application standards, workplace trends, contract furniture practices, and customer needs.
  • Build proficiency in MillerKnoll product application, typical development, specification workflows, and design documentation standards to support future growth into more independent application design responsibilities.
  • Apply basic awareness of design standards, accessibility considerations, product constraints, and MillerKnoll application guidelines, with review from more experienced designers.
  • Identify questions, constraints, risks, or missing information in assigned work and escalate appropriately.
  • Support progressively more complex assigned tasks as technical accuracy, application judgment, and business context develop.
  • Manage assigned tasks in a timely and organized manner, communicating progress and priorities clearly.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design, Architectural Design or Facility Design from an accredited program, or relevant academic discipline
  • 0–2 years of relevant interior design, commercial design, workplace design, dealership, manufacturer, or professional services experience preferred.
  • Internship, co-op, studio, or project experience related to commercial interiors, workplace design, furniture planning, or design documentation preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Foundational knowledge of commercial design drawings, including floor plans, elevations, electrical plans, furniture plans, and related documentation.
  • Foundational proficiency with design and documentation tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, CET, SketchUp, CAP Studio, Adobe Creative Suite, PowerPoint, and Microsoft 365, with willingness to build deeper capability.
  • Develop increasing proficiency in CET, AutoCAD, CAP Studio, SketchUp, Microsoft 365, and other tools relevant to assigned responsibilities.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage assigned tasks against deadlines.
  • Ability to receive direction, incorporate feedback, ask clarifying questions, and work collaboratively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to explain design intent, project status, questions, and next steps clearly.
  • Curiosity about workplace design, contract furniture applications, MillerKnoll products, product strategy, and customer needs.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing priorities, timelines, and project requirements.
  • Professionalism, sound judgment, and accountability in business interactions.
