About the Role:

Grade Level (for internal use):

08 Associate Consultant - Chemicals Consulting

About the Role:

As an Associate Consultant in Chemicals Consulting, you will support project teams in solving commercial, strategic, and investment questions for clients across the global chemicals value chain. You will gather and test evidence, build structured analyses and models, and turn findings into clear, accurate, client-ready outputs. This is a development role with exposure to experienced consultants, S&P Global Energy data and experts, international clients, and a broad range of commodity and specialty chemical markets.

The Team

The Chemicals Consulting team is part of S&P Global Energy and combines market intelligence, proprietary data, industry expertise, and consulting methods to help clients make high-value decisions across the chemicals value chain. We work with chemical producers, national oil companies, governments, investors, technology providers, and financial institutions on strategy, market and commercial assessment, feasibility, techno-economics, competitiveness, transactions, sustainability, and business transformation. The team is global, collaborative, and client-led, with close links to S&P Global research, price reporting, data, analytics, and adjacent consulting practices.

Responsibilities and Impact

  • Conduct structured research: Perform secondary and primary research on chemical markets, companies, assets, technologies, end-use sectors, trade, policy, and sustainability, using S&P Global Energy resources and credible external sources with clear documentation of assumptions and references.
  • Build and maintain consulting analyses: Develop market sizing, supply-demand balances, competitor and asset benchmarking, price and margin analysis, production cost comparisons, value-chain maps, scenario models, and basic financial or feasibility assessments under project-team guidance.
  • Synthesize evidence: Translate quantitative and qualitative evidence into concise charts, tables, written findings, and presentation pages; check calculations, units, definitions, and source consistency so that outputs are accurate, traceable, and client-ready.
  • Support client engagements: Assist in interviews, client meetings, and workshops by preparing materials, capturing decisions and actions, and following through on assigned analyses; communicate progress, issues, and emerging insights clearly to the project manager.
  • Contribute to team knowledge: Support the development of proposals, credentials, case studies, knowledge libraries, and reusable tools, working with research and subject-matter experts to strengthen the team’s understanding of chemical markets.
  • Drive personal development: Take ownership of assigned work, meet agreed deadlines, seek feedback, and build consulting, technical, and commercial capability through formal learning, coaching, and varied project experience.

What We're Looking For:

Required Qualifications:

  • An S&P Global employee at this level would typically have 1+ years of relevant experience in chemical markets, energy, industrial markets, consulting, market intelligence, or financial analysis.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong numerical and analytical skills, including confidence working with market and company data, checking calculations, and drawing evidence-based conclusions; proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint is required.
  • Communication & Learning Agility: Clear written and spoken English, with the ability to organize information logically and produce accurate, professional work; willingness to learn chemical value chains, market fundamentals, and consulting methods.

Consulting and Power Skills:

  • Curiosity and Structured Problem Solving: Asks good questions, breaks work into manageable steps, and distinguishes evidence from assumption.
  • Quality and Ownership: Delivers reliable work, checks details, raises issues early, and follows tasks through to completion.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Explains analysis clearly, listens to feedback, and works effectively with colleagues across disciplines, seniority levels, and locations.
  • Adaptability: Manages changing priorities, learns new markets and analytical techniques quickly, and applies feedback to improve performance.

Additional Preferred Qualifications.

  • Specialized Knowledge: Exposure to petrochemicals, polymers, fertilizers, specialty chemicals, refining, process technology, sustainability, circularity, or industrial decarbonization.
  • Technical & Digital Tools: Experience with data analysis or visualization tools, financial modeling, market databases, statistics, Python, Power BI, or similar analytical applications.
  • Global Perspective: Additional language capability and prior experience working or studying in an international or client-facing environment.
