Duties
Serving as a Automotive Mechanic WG-5823-11 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Mobile Assets Branch (MAB), Training Support Division (TSD) under the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate (MRSD) and located in Glynco, Georgia. The MAB provides fleet management and automotive repair support to a large motor vehicle fleet consisting of a wide variety of organization-owned and government-leased vehicles and equipment. These assets are used to train students in a wide variety of driving techniques such as high-speed pursuit, skids, anti-terrorist evasion techniques, surveillance, investigations, marine operations, etc. Typical duties include: Replacing sensors, water pumps, spark, plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines. Adjusting brakes, transmission linkages, engine idle, voltage and current control valves, sensing valves, expansion valves, arid pressure regulator valves. Analyzing the repair request and independently researching, developing, and fabricating the automotive alterations. Locating worn or poorly adjusted parts through visual and auditory checks, and through the use of a small variety of test equipment such as diagnostic computers, test lamps, timing lights, multi-meters, tachometers, and dwell meters. Working with instructors in the research, development, and testing of automotive equipment needed to meet the diverse and tactical utilization of vehicles in the law enforcement and antiterrorism field of instruction. The applicant must have experience refers to knowledge of various techniques for diagnosing, removing, replacing, cleaning, and installing a wide variety of parts, components, and accessories. Must have experience with performing safety inspections; familiarity with diagnostic tools; performing preventative maintenance such as oil changes, filter changes, fluid changes, topping off fluids and greasing chassis; identifying wear patterns on tires and wheels, inspecting steering and suspension components such as tie rods, idler arm, pitman arm, rack n pinion, ball joints, shocks, structs, control arm bushings and coil springs; replacing belts and idler pulleys; repairing coolant leaks from hoses, water pump, heater cores, and radiators in cooling systems; repairing and recharging air conditioning, replacing hoses, compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valves, orifice tube filter and receiver drier; diagnosing brake systems, ability to perform engine performance diagnosis; utilizing specialty tools to diagnose complex electrical issues; diagnose and repair engine components such as intake manifolds, cylinder heads and gaskets, exhaust components, and complete engine replacement; diagnose and repair transmission faults such as torque convertors, solenoids, governors, seals, u-joints and drive shaft; axels; body work, welding, equipment unique to golf carts, gators, ATVs, water craft, trailers, etc. All qualifications and eligibility requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Background Investigation: To ensure the accomplishment of our mission, FLETC requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully pass a background investigation for Suitability/Fitness as a condition of placement in this 5N-Non-Sensitive position. This review may include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Physical Demands: Makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. They frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. Work Environment: Servicing of equipment may be performed in shop or on-site. Most work is done inside where it is drafty and noisy, and fumes from vehicles are usually present. Frequently stands on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Crawls under vehicles and makes repairs while on hard, usually damp surfaces. Occasionally performs repairs outside, sometimes in bad weather. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present. Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains. Note: Current or former Federal employees MUST submit a copy of their SF-50 Form which shows competitive service appointment ("position occupied" block 34 on the SF-50 should show a "1"), tenure group (block 24 should show a 1 or 2), grade, and salary. If you are applying for a higher grade, please provide the SF-50 Form which shows the length of time you have been in your current/highest grade (examples of appropriate SF-50s include promotions, With-in Grade/Range Increases, and SF-50s dated a year apart within the same grade/job).
