Job Summary:

The Biostatistician II within the UW Statistical Data Analysis Center (SDAC) will provide biostatistical insights on study teams providing independent statistical data analysis supporting Independent Data Monitoring Committees serving to monitor the safety of industry sponsored clinical trials.

  • This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely at an offsite, non-campus work location.
  • Candidates who demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities will be given first consideration:
  • Experience in biostatistics, clinical trial design and implementation, data safety monitoring, industry clinical trials

Key Job Responsibilities:

Designs and implements statistical methods and applicable resource materials used for research projects

Develops research study designs for research projects

Contributes to preparing, writing, editing, and submitting research manuscripts, presentations, reports, research grant and contract proposals and/or post-award reports to funding agencies

Evaluates, prepares, analyzes, and interprets existing data and sources, selects and applies appropriate statistical methods, and prepares summarized reports

Advises on best practices and established policies, procedures, and regulations and conducts biostatistical analysis for internal and external stakeholder groups

The Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics (BMI) is a highly collaborative basic science department in the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). UW News and World Report recently ranked BMI as the 11th best program in the country, tied with the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. BMI serves as the SMPH home for data science, including research at the basic, translational, and clinical levels; graduate, professional, and health professions education; and service to the broader community with a goal of building foundational knowledge, and improving clinical care and human health.

Department faculty and research staff collaborate broadly, both in SMPH and across the UW-Madison campus. The research staff provide significant support to investigators in preparing proposals, designing statistical approaches and clinical trials, analyzing data, and helping investigators prepare and submit reports and manuscripts for publications.

The department is home to two clinical trial programs, the Statistical Data Analysis Center (SDAC) and the Data Coordinating Center (DCC). SDAC conducts arms-length analysis of industry clinical trial data in support of Data Safety Monitoring Boards (DSMBs) and is considered the gold standard for such work.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $81,569 annually ; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in the use of SAS and SPLUS or R
  • Experience in the use of the UNIX Operating system and with the UNIX programming environment
  • Experience working with data from large, multifaceted databases
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with clinical trials research

Education:

Master's Degree in biostatistics, or closely related quantitative discipline, is preferred.
