About Us

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the world's leading basic research institutions in the life sciences. In addition to its main laboratory in Heidelberg, EMBL operates sites in Hinxton (EMBL-EBI, United Kingdom), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Barcelona (Spain) and Rome (Italy).

Your Role

The Facility Management team at EMBL's Heidelberg headquarters is at the start of implementing a CAFM system – and you'll play a leading role in shaping that process. Reporting to the Head of Facility Management, you will:

  • Actively help design, structure and roll out the new CAFM system, including the data model and process definitions;
  • Capture, prepare and maintain building and technical services plans in the BIM model, and migrate existing 2D records into Revit;
  • Integrate building services planning (HVAC/electrical) into existing architectural models and floor plans;
  • Produce execution plans for refurbishments and renovations across construction and lab-building projects;
  • Collaborate with in-house architects as well as external planning offices and specialist engineers.

You have

  • Completed training as a building technician, technical systems planner (building services, equipment or electrical engineering), or draughtsperson;
  • At least 5 years of professional experience, ideally at a planning office in architecture, building services or electrical engineering;
  • Confident use of Autodesk Revit (2D/3D); working in BIM is a firm requirement for this role;
  • Experience with AutoCAD and solid handling of DWG/DXF files;
  • Experience with the implementation or rollout of a CAFM system is a clear plus;
  • Basic knowledge of structural engineering and building physics, with cross-trade understanding;
  • Confident handling of DIN standards and construction scheduling;
  • Good spatial visualization skills;
  • Good written and spoken German and/or English;
  • Willingness for ongoing professional development, particularly in BIM/CAFM.

What We Offer

From day one, you'll take on real responsibility – not support work, but your own projects. Flexible hours, short decision paths, and a team that backs each other up rather than just clocking in and out. We're on the verge of implementing a CAFM system – you won't just be a user, you'll help shape how processes, data structures and standards look going forward. Your experience and input feed directly into decisions that will shape Facility Management for years to come. Further training here isn't just talk – it's part of the job.
