Commercial Construction Assistant Superintendent - Healthcare

Job Description:

The Assistant Superintendent (Assistant Supt.) supports managing workflow consistent with the project schedule and HITT safety and quality standards. Within HITT's Healthcare group, the Assistant Supt. supports construction of hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, medical office buildings, imaging and laboratory spaces, and renovations within occupied healthcare environments, where patient safety, infection prevention, life safety, and continuity of operations are critical to client success. The Assistant Supt. communicates project priorities to field staff and subcontractors, maintains daily logs/reports of all activities and site conditions, and manages the punch list and closeout process through owner/architect and facilities-team acceptance. The Assistant Supt. assists in planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the building aspects of each project in order to meet budget, quality, time, and safety objectives, with particular attention to the demands of occupied healthcare settings.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and administer the HITT safety program across all subcontractors, including prompt reporting/investigation of accidents and incidents and assisting in safety inspections by outside agencies, with particular attention to occupied healthcare spaces, infection-control barriers, interim life-safety measures, egress, and utility shutdowns, including documented pre-task planning and daily safety engagement
  • Maintain HITT quality standards for all aspects of the project, including compliance with infection-control requirements, healthcare codes, medical gas standards, and owner-specific facility protocols; help verify work against approved drawings, specifications, submittals, mockups, testing requirements, and manufacturer instructions
  • Work with the project manager and Superintendent in formulating the project schedule and rolling three-week look-ahead, ensuring proper methods and sequence of installation are followed and schedule commitments are met, including coordination of phased work, infection-control measures, shutdown windows, inspections, commissioning, and turnover
  • Maintain good working relationships with all subcontractors on the project, including specialty trades for medical gas, controls, nurse call, low-voltage, and healthcare equipment systems; develop relationships within the community that enhance business opportunities and ensure subcontractors are treated fairly
  • Ensure complete, accurate daily documentation of work orders/tickets, inspection records, photographs, as-built conditions, and shutdown logs; understand subcontractor scope of work to avoid unnecessary change orders; identify problems early given the complexity of healthcare systems and occupied-space coordination, and act immediately to provide solutions
  • Assist in developing and organizing the site team and logistics, arranging for temporary facilities/utilities for the site (including infection-control and life-safety provisions), and identifying long-lead items that need to be expedited, with attention to items critical to healthcare project delivery
  • Support implementation and verification of infection-control risk assessment and interim life-safety measures, including containment, negative-air performance, pressure monitoring, housekeeping, egress, and documented daily inspections
  • Assist in preparing and executing method-of-procedure plans for utility shutdowns, tie-ins, energization, and other high-risk activities, including advance approvals, notifications, contingency planning, and post-work verification
  • Support field coordination of MEP systems, medical gas, controls, low-voltage systems, owner-furnished equipment, above-ceiling work, and access requirements; help confirm installation sequence and service clearances before work is placed
  • Coordinate with the design team, facility representatives, authorities having jurisdiction, and third-party inspectors to help resolve field conditions, RFIs, inspections, and code-compliance issues promptly

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; four-year degree from an accredited university with a concentration in construction, engineering, or business strongly preferred
  • 2-5 years' experience in commercial construction, including experience with a commercial general contractor; healthcare or occupied-space construction experience a plus
  • Tenant renovations, service work, work in occupied spaces, weekend work, and fast-paced project experience all a plus
  • Project lead experience a plus
  • Ability to master sector/project-specific software systems including but not limited to: Microsoft Office suite (Project, Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), ProCore, Adobe, BlueBeam
  • OSHA 30 Certification preferred
  • Ability to walk and/or stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must demonstrate a strong ability to: Communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally, with a strong focus on audience-appropriate business writing and verbal skills Demonstrate a positive attitude and passion for construction and our industry Gather data, interpret it into meaningful information, and relay it through clear, concise communication strategies; understand how pieces and processes fit into and affect the bigger picture/business model Organize and manage tasks and priorities Demonstrate integrity consistently with The HITT Way and HITT's core values Seek continuous improvement of knowledge and abilities, with an internal focus on self-improvement Adapt and exercise flexibility with the ever-changing world of technology, design, means and methods Collaborate with people of various backgrounds and styles Create and maintain relationships with colleagues, clients, subcontractors, and vendors Exhibit respectfulness by being punctual, engaged/focused, and respectful of others
