Position – Commissioning Engineer – Mechanical

Reports to: Senior Commissioning Engineer/Project Manager

Position Summary:

We are seeking a commissioning engineer with 6-8 years of relevant mechanical engineering and commissioning experience, including experience managing and coordinating commissioning activities on complex infrastructure, transportation, institutional, commercial, or industrial projects.

Technical Responsibilities:

- Perform commissioning activities for MTA projects from planning through final acceptance and closeout.

- Serve as a primary commissioning point of contact with MTA/client representatives, owners, contractors, subcontractors, design consultants, vendors, and internal project teams.

- Update project-specific Commissioning Plans, commissioning schedules, Commissioning Matrices, pre-functional checklists, functional performance test procedures, and commissioning documentation.

- Review contract specifications, drawings, approved submittals, equipment schedules, O&M manuals, sequences of operation, factory test reports, TAB reports, and manufacturer requirements to identify commissioning requirements and verify compliance.

- Coordinate commissioning activities with the construction schedule and contractor work plan; identify system readiness, access, temporary conditions, shutdowns, utilities, testing resources, and testing dependencies.

- Lead commissioning meetings and coordination meetings; prepare meeting minutes, action items, commissioning schedules, and regular status reports.

- Coordinate and witness equipment start-up, pre-functional inspections, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, field testing, factory testing when required, and retesting.

- Review contractor testing procedures and test results for compliance with contract requirements and approved commissioning procedures.

- Maintain commissioning deficiency logs; track deficiencies, corrective actions, retesting, and final resolution.

- Coordinate with contractors and owners to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, controls, operational, and system integration issues that affect commissioning.

- Verify that commissioning documentation, test reports, calibration certificates, equipment data, as-built information, O&M manuals, training records, and other turnover documents are complete and acceptable.

- Support pre-final and final inspections, punch-list verification, system turnover, owner training, and project closeout.

- Prepare commissioning reports and provide clear technical recommendations to project management and clients regarding system readiness and acceptance.

- Ensure all commissioning activities are performed in accordance with MTA/project specifications, approved submittals, applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, safety requirements, and project-specific procedures.

Requirements

Experience and qualifications:

- 6-8 years of relevant mechanical engineering and commissioning experience

- Required: OSHA 30 or ability to obtain; valid driver’s license.

- Preferred: EIT or PE

- Strong experience with MTA, NYC transit, public infrastructure, or other owner/agency commissioning requirements is preferred.

- Must have demonstrated mechanical commissioning experience and the ability to independently develop commissioning documentation and lead field testing.

Educational Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/electrical engineering required. Equivalent directly relevant commissioning experience may be considered in accordance with company policy.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to perform site walks and field inspections at active construction and transportation facilities

- Climb stairs/ladders and access mechanical/equipment rooms as required

- Stand or walk for extended periods

- Lift/carry light testing equipment and documents

- Must be able to work safely in active construction environments and use required PPE\

Salary Range:

- $100,000 – $115,000 annually, depending on experience, engineering/commissioning credentials, MTA or public-sector experience, and technical qualifications.
