Controller

Overview

The Controller is primarily responsible for overseeing and managing the department of Finance and coordinating it’s overlap of other functions such as employee benefits, compliance, technology, and office administration. The Controller is responsible for developing and monitoring the firm's financial strategy, budgeting, accounts payable, accounts receiveable, vendor management, forecasting programs, and overseeing financial reporting and control. Responsibilities also include overseeing the Office Administrator.

This position is managed directly by the CEO of Petersen Hastings. Oversight of the above items includes close coordination with the CEO, COO, CCO.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Corporate Financials

Create, implement, and maintain financial policies, systems, processes, and tools to maximize efficiency of workflow and financial controls.

Oversee the preparation and ensure accuracy of all financial reporting materials for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

Monitor all purchasing and payroll activity for employees.

Approve vendor payables for check signing.

Develop and manage direct accounting/finance staff.

Forecasting

Provide analysis and compile other supporting information for special projects.

Develop and execute analysis of various business initiatives.

Prepare various reports to assist with financial decision-making.

Fiscal Responsibility

Develop and monitor the annual budget.

Oversee cash management, financing activities and banking relationships.

Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.

Coordinate/oversee proper filing of tax returns (income tax, DOR, and payroll).

Compensation, Benefits, and Policy Programs

Assist with the firm’s employee benefits plans (401(k), group insurance, FSA, leave).

Assist in the implementation of employee salary reviews.

Oversee timely calculations of employee performance incentives.

Review and maintain business liability insurance policies.

Ensure compliance with federal and state employment regulations and taxes.

Maintain and update company policies for the employee handbook and BambooHR.

Office Administration

Oversee and manage the periodic and day-to-day office administrative duties of all firm offices.

Complete external surveys that provide benchmarking related to wealth advisory firms.

Prerequisites

Education and Experience

Certified Public Accountant License

Minimum 3 years of experience in public accounting, or

Minimum 5 years of experience as controller or assistant controller

Skills and Knowledge

Ability to provide valuable insights and logical explanations when faced with difficult questions.

Proven ability to be a creative and innovative thinker.

Proven commitment in a team setting.

Proficient with database technology and client reporting software applications, particularly Contact Management System and Portfolio Management System.

Personal and Interpersonal

Committed to strong values and upholding the highest ethical behavior.

Adhere to strict standard for confidentiality and discretion of all client and employee information.

Ability to project a professional image to clients, prospects, and community.

Work well under pressure and willing to contribute to the wider strategic picture.

Collaborative, able to work with and through others.
